Week 2 college football sees the Bobcats and Panthers meeting at Riccardo Silva Stadium.
The Bobcats gave Baylor a fight last weekend but the end result was a 29 – 20 loss to the Bears to open the 2021 campaign. Expected to lose by 14 points, Texas State was really never out of the game and kept it close all afternoon.
FIU made sure to schedule a cupcake to start the 2021 season, and the bashing of Long Island University was just so impressive, wasn’t it? Goodness me oh my, who the hell puts LIU on their FBS schedule? You know it’s bad when you go that far down to chase a program only in its 4th year back in existence and 2nd year at FCS level to find a ‘meaningful game’ to put in the win column. It counts!!
The FIU Panthers are favored by -1.5 points in this Sun Belt vs. Conf USA matchup.
Texas State Bobcats
The Bobcats never gave up and showed some tremendous grit hanging around with Baylor the entire game despite a 9 point loss. That’s a Big 12 program coming to your house to play football!
So, that was impressive to me and it also cost me one of my suggested bets last weekend since I wrote that game up here.
Brady McBride held his own but the stats really don’t show how the game played out. McBride shot 50% going 20 for 40 with 3 INTs, 1 TD, and only picked up 156 passing yards. Unfortunately, McBride is not a dual-threat QB and he has to rely on his arm to produce offense.
Jahmyl Jeter led the team with 45 rush yards on 8 carries while finding the end zone once in the loss. Brock Sturges sat out of the opener but it looks as if he is set to return according to his Twitter feed.
So, that should help matters on the ground to give McBride a little relief from having to do all the work. Sturges has some high expectations for himself in 2021, and my man is built to perform at a high level!
McBride did connect with 9 different receivers in the loss with Marcel Barbie leading the way putting up 56 yards with 4 grabs and a score.
FIU Panthers
Yep, he said LIU, dem Sharks, baby!
So, we can obviously take nothing from a scrimmage that counts against an FCS outfit to open the season. Moving on, the Panthers will still be without WR Shermar Thornton this weekend as the dude just can’t catch a break after missing all of last season.
Thornton’s senior season was supposed to be his best but tonsilitis will be enough to have him sidelined for the first two games of 2021. Hopefully, he will get back to the field to help the team.
Meanwhile, D’Vonte Price was a man last weekend trotting for 3 scores and 165 rushing yards. The dude can ball and his Twitter feed is also #PawsupFIU proud to see the cage rocking! FIU home games, baby! That place is rocking when things are good and Butch Davis needs to bring this program to the next level. This is season #5 for the longtime coach who is expected to bring a certain level of talent to Florida, despite the obvious major programs in and around town.
Can we really point out all the good stats everyone put up against LIU though? I mean, they did what they should have done to a second-year FCS program.
This will be a much better litmus test for the Panthers and the line setters are saying as much. This was a pick ’em game early in the week and the line has slowly crept up to -1.5 for the hometown boys.
Max Bortenschlager pretty much completed every pass he threw (14 of 17) with a QB rating of 240.8. Yeah, not bad lol but he threw a pick so uh oh! LoL
