Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M is in the midst of a treacherous 2022 season, and if they lose Saturday night, they may finish with a losing record for the first time since 2005. It’s been a rough year for the Aggies, and they find themselves losers of their last five. There’s no pulse right now for the Aggies, and you have to wonder is this it for Jimbo Fisher?
A&M walked into SEC play with a 2-1 record, and even defeated Arkansas in Arlington in their SEC opener, but it’s been dark since. Three road trips to Starkville, Tuscaloosa, and Columbia resulted in losses to Mississippi State, Alabama, and South Carolina. The Aggies returned to Kyle Field, and dropped a fourth straight to Ole Miss before hosting a fellow struggling group in the conference massively shorthanded.
In Week 8, Texas A&M lost to Florida, 41-24, dropping to 4-4-1 against the spread this season.
Texas A&M is scoring 22.9 points per game, while allowing 23.8 ppg.
Incompetent QB play has been the Aggies’ achilles heel this season. They went back to Haynes King last weekend, and got the same results. Now it’s true, A&M was severely underhanded last weekend, but the losses just continue to pile up. Jimbo may choose to start King again Saturday, but true freshman Conner Weigman has a chance to build on a strong performance versus Ole Miss if he returns.
Devon Achane has handled all of the backfield work for A&M. The junior back isn’t a bruiser, but he’s been the focal point of the offense this season, surpassing the 120-yard mark in six of the last seven games. Achane had another strong performance versus UF last weekend, scoring three touchdowns for the first time this season. Achane has totaled 887 rushing yards, caught 36 passes and scored nine touchdowns (6 rush, 3 rec) on the season.
An injury to Ainias Smith was a bit hit to the wideout room, but true freshman Evan Stewart has stepped up to the plate. Stewart caught eight passes for 106 yards in the Bama game, and he topped that last weekend versus the Gators, with a 8-catch, 120-yard performance. Stewart leads A&M in receptions (46) and receiving yards (598).
Auburn Tigers
Auburn’s fall from grace and transition to basketball school hasn’t been a pleasant sight. Ironically they are having an painfully identical season in comparison to the Aggies.
Auburn began SEC play by defeating Mizzou in a battle of Tigers, before dropping a second crop of cats’ contests to LSU. Their first two road trips haven’t gone well, as a trip to Athens resulted in a 30-point loss to Georgia, and they were overpowered in Oxford by Ole Miss in Week 7. Auburn faced Arkansas for homecoming and loss by two touchdowns, and their luck worsened in a return to Mississippi last weekend.
In Week 8, Auburn lost to Ole Miss, 48-34, capitalizing on their underdog spread for the third weekend in a row.
Auburn scores 22.3 points per game, while allowing 28.2 ppg.
Auburn fans should have appreciated Bo Nix while he was enrolled, because the mess at QB has simply been too much to overcome, especially playing in the SEC. An injury to incumbent starter T.J. Finley led to the Tigers throwing true freshman Robby Ashford into the water, and it’s generated underwhelming results. The Tigers somehow put a scare on Mississippi State after passing for just 75 yards, and it’s the root of their on-field issues.
Ashford has passed for 1,374 yards with five touchdowns to five interceptions, while rushing for 504 yards and five scores.
Tank Bigsby remains a steady force in the run game here in 2022. The 2x 1,000-yard rusher finally got loose last weekend versus Ole Miss, dashing for a season-high 179 yards and two scores. He paces Auburn again with 676 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
Auburn’s mess at quarterback has led to a very run-heavy approach, and no wideout has surpassed the 25-catch mark here in Week 11. Ja’Varrius Johnson is knocking on the door with team leads in receptions (23) and receiving yards (428).
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- A&M are 3-3 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- AUB are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- Aggies are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games.
- Tigers are 5-3 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Free Week 11 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
It’s crazy how talented the cellar of the SEC is. Auburn and Texas A&M come into this one with identical 3-6 records and they’d easily rest atop any other conference out the SEC and Big Ten. They’ve been victims of the talent surrounding them, and Saturday night someone will get the right the ship and stop the bleeding.
Texas A&M situation is so unsettled, and with them set to host UMass next weekend, signs are pointing to this being Auburn’s time to shine. It’s been a rough year for one of the deep south’s most prominent programs, and they deserve this moment.
Roll with the punches, and take Auburn’s spread for this battle of troubled SEC schools. The under is in play as well with both offenses sputtering.
