HISTORY: UCLA and Stanford have faced off in nearly every season since 1925, with the in-state foes having one of the more back-in-forth series in the conference over time. UCLA leads the all-time series 47-43-2, but Stanford impressively won 11 straight matchups from 2009-2018.
Stanford Cardinal
An early start to Pac-12 play has given Stanford a bit of trouble. After roughing Colgate up in their opener, the Cardinal have picked up three conference losses swiftly. They were overmatched by USC in Week 3, and after their bye, they couldn’t keep up with Washington. Stanford then faced both schools from the Beaver State, falling to Oregon at the Zoo in Week 5, then losing their fourth straight game to Oregon State.
Now the last two weeks have been a different story for David Shaw’s team. Stanford traveled to South Bend and defeated their arch rivals Notre Dame in a slugfest as 16-point underdogs. Last weekend they returned to Pac-12 play and kept things going in Palo Alto.
In Week 6, Stanford beat Arizona State, 15-14, failing to cover as the rare favorites, dropping to 2-5 against the spread.
Stanford has scored 25.1 points per game, 27.4 ppg.
Tanner McKee’s last two starts have possibly saved his job as Stanford’s starting signal caller. After leading the Cardinal to a memorable upset win over Notre Dame, McKee went for a season-high 320 yards in win over Arizona State. He’ll have to stay sharp in if they want thrive at Rose Bowl this weekend.
McKee has thrown for 1,857 passing yards with ten touchdowns to six interceptions.
E.J. Smith’s injury has led to Casey Filkins taking on the lead role. The junior has surpassed the 120-yard mark in three of the last five games, wearing Notre Dame down with 32 carries, 137 total yards and a score. Filkins has totaled 683 yards (478 rush, 205 rec) on the season, and scored five touchdowns.
Fifth-year senior Michael Wilson leads the team in receiving yards (418), but after missing the ASU game his status for this weekend remains in the air. Elijah Higgins has been steady alongside him, and he leads Stanford with 30 receptions for 369 yards.
UCLA Bruins
UCLA breezed through non-conference play, and after picking up a signature win over Washington on the final day of September, they doubled back with a ten-point victory over Utah. Last time out, they were faced with their stiffest test yet, with an emotion factor only adding to the fire.
In Week 8, UCLA lost to Oregon in Eugene, 45-30, losing their first game of the season.
UCLA scores 41.5 points per game, while allowing 22.6 ppg.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been around for a very long time, and the four-year starter is having his best season yet. The fifth-year quarterback gave a Heisman performance of his own versus Utah, passing for 300 yards and scoring five touchdowns against one of the best defenses in the nation. DTR is special, and he’ll like serve a strong bounce back effort here.
Thompson-Robinson has thrown for 1,772 passing yards with 17 touchdowns to two interceptions, and rushed for 269 yards and four more scores through seven starts.
Zach Charbonnet has been huge again for the Bruins this season. The running back returned for his senior season after rushing for 1,137 yards last season, and he’s on pace to surpass that number here in 2022. Charbonnet has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in five of six games this season, including a career-high 198 yards in the win over Utah.
Charbonnet is among Pac-12 leaders with 766 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the season.
Jake Bobo made one of his best decisions ever, transferring over from Duke into a winning situation here in Pasadena. Bobo has 32 catches and leads the team with 486 receiving yards after scoring in each of the passed three games. Kazmeir Allen leads UCLA with 36 receptions, while totaling 244 yards.

Free Week 9 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
Stanford stung me amongst others last time out in South Bend. That is the Stanford squad we were expecting to see all season, and while it may be a bit too late, they’re capable of capitalizing on points. This will be the best offense they’ve faced since Oregon four weeks ago, so it remains to be seen if they can keep up with angry group of Bruins here.
UCLA’s season is not lost, and with an assertive response here they can head into their light patch of conference play with victories over Washington and Utah standing out. They’re game at the Rose Bowl with USC could have CFB Playoff implications, and that means Chip Kelly’s team must stay the course and keep things going here.
With the pressure of the going into an Oregon matchup behind them, the Bruins should bounce back here by overpowering a pedestrian Stanford team and laying the points. UCLA by 17
