The Southern Miss Golden Eagles take flight over to Mobile, Alabama, as they find themselves in a pick ’em game against the South Alabama Jaguars on Saturday to start the 2021 season.
The Eagles really didn’t soar to great heights in 2020, and everything went array after the first game of the season last year. After an opening game loss to this same Jags team at home, Jay Hopson walked into his office the following Monday and gathered his things. “I am done here, you can find yourselves a new coach”.
The Jags also welcome in a new head coach in Kane Wommack, and he is now officially the youngest head coach in all of FBS at 34. Wommack has been busy the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator with the Indiana Hoosiers, and he brings in Major Applewhite to run the offense too!

Well, obviously, when interim head coach Scotty Walden took over last season after the sudden decision for their head coach to quit, he really was not prepared. Naturally, everyone was a bit shocked when your head coach up and walks out after an opening day loss.
Walden seemed to be the best man suited for the job in a pinch but it only led to 3 wins and one of those came against that highly regarded Northern Alabama team. Hmm hmm, that is sarcasm if you don’t recognize it!
So, Will Hall, the former OC at Tulane, now gets to blow the whistle making his debut as a head man at the FBS level. Hall was calling the plays for Tulane the last two years helping to guide them to two straight bowl appearances. He will be his own Offensive Coordinator as the head coach doing double duty hoping to build on his experience. Keep in mind, Hall mounted a 56 – 20 record as the head coach of the Div 2 West Georgia and West Alabama programs from 2011 – 16 combined.
So, have you heard of Frank Gore? Yeah, the one in the NFL that has been running the ball for about 100 years now? Well, his kid will be getting the lion’s share of the carries out of the Southern Miss backfield in 2021.
Gore Jr. basically earned the confidence of the team last season as a freshman earning 2nd Team Conference USA honors while taking in over 700 yards on the ground. Look for #3 to be bursting from an opening led by four offensive linemen that return this season. This O-Line has earned a combined 116 starts and Senior center Arvin Fletcher will be in charge.
Fletcher has pulled in 47 of those accumulative starts to his credit over four seasons and there is experience all around him to aid the ground game.

The Jags have certainly got to be happy to have found their new head coach, and he brings along some other well-recognized names to his staff. Not only did Kane Wommack convince Major Applewhite to leave Alabama, but he also asked former Hawaii DC Corey Batoon to sit at the table and they both said yes!
Hey, when you are taking over your first-ever FBS gig and you can attract well-known names to be on your coaching staff? Life might be good for the foreseeable future in Mobile, and an absence from the post-season for the last 4 years needs to be ended this season. The last four years for Jags fans have been tough, as the team has only managed to find 13 wins over the last 4 seasons.
South Alabama returns 17 starters from 2020 and the news only gets better from there. Wommack’s coaching staff has attracted 13 D1 scholarship players who transferred over to Mobile, most notably the former Utah QB Jake Bentley. Bentley and Applewhite started working on watching film and technique from the second they shook hands. The two of them have been cranking out a new playbook designed for what they have in place to work with.
As expected, Wommack announced his expected starters on Monday this week, and you can see that he is relying heavily on the recruits to start the season.
Wommack was quoted on the team page saying, “The transfer portal was certainly good to our program, and It helped us fill some immediate depth that had not been there in the last few years. … Those guys are all contributing on a major level for this football program and they’ve bought into what we’re doing here. And that to me is the key when you bring transfers in.”
Bentley and Miss State transfer RB Kareem Walker have earned their starting spots with a strong Spring and veteran leadership, both playing their final Senior season in 2021. Oh I could go on, but I think you get the point about how excited Mobile is to have a team in place that might just surprise everyone OUTSIDE of camp.
Let’s just say that the South Alabama team total is 4.5 wins this season… Shake the Magic 8-Ball… SIGNS POINT TO YES! Okay then, you get my drift? Good! Play that over if you are into futures betting and making money! We’re done here!

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick:
Ready for it? HOME DOG! The opening line was listed at +1.5 for the Jaguars. All of the incoming experience lead me right to the Jags as the line has now moved towards a home win to open 2021. I will call for a 36 – 28 Jags win which now has a line of -1 in their favor. I will also point you to that Over 56 as a play to make if not, at least, a damn strong lean. Yes, they will both have success on offense to start the season, make no mistake about it!
