Week 4 college football sees the Bulls and Cougars meet at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
In what is expected to be a lopsided win for the home team, the BYU Cougars play host to USF on Saturday in Provo as 23 point favorites.
The traveling Bulls were shut out 45- 0 the last time they hit the road when opening day arrived and they found themselves at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack had no issues sending the Bulls home without a point in their pockets and after a loss to the Gators, it was 0 – 2 out of the gate for South Florida. A win over Florida A&M last weekend is uh, well, a win over Florida A&M, so let’s back to FBS football now.
BYU is playing FBS, what we like to call ‘big boy football’ thus far, with wins over both Arizona programs along with a win over rival Utah in the books already. Even as an independent participant the Cougars aren’t playing a cupcake until they get Idaho State late in the season. They are getting a good chunk of money for that game from the Bengals, but it could also be what stands in the way of any perfect season arguments too. In this day and age, you not only need to stay perfect, but scheduling FCS teams for these Mid-Major games can be costly. To some, it could even cost a simple bowl appearance, much less a shot at a big game in December or January’s Bowl Season!
Jalen Hall has taken the reigns and managed to keep control of the team, and beating Arizona State last weekend really impressed a lot of folks around the landscape of college football.
The Cougars pass defense ranks 98 and has given up 252.3 pass yards per game through 3 games, but this might not be a big test and more of a good spot to get better prepared for what is to come later in this BYU schedule.
The Cougars are favored by -23 points in this AAC vs. Ind Conf matchup.
S. Florida Bulls
It is pretty clear that the only ones expecting an upset here are the Bulls players and coaches, but this will be no easy task to find a win in Provo. The line setters have also made it obvious that 23 points might not even be enough to depict how this final score might look when the final whistle blows.
It’s basically been a two-man show under center for 2nd-year head coach Jeff Scott although they have already matched their win streak from 2020! Unfortunately, that number is one, so that W over Fla A&M will likely see them as underdogs in the last 9 games of the season, this outing included.
The 19.3 ppg ranks them 114th out of 130 FBS programs and the defensive stats are also in bad shape. The Bulls rank 125th allowing 262.7 rush yards per game and the 523.7 total yards allowed place them at 126 in the defensive rankings. That ain’t good, kids!
Timmy McClain and Cade Fortin are seeing the snaps and McClain is, at least, putting up some decent numbers for a team not playing well. McClain has put up 372 passing yards and 78 more with his feet on the ground. However, the two of them have combined to throw 4 INT and McClain has the only passing TD to speak of for the Bulls in 2021.
Xavier Weaver is the go-to guy in town, and he has that receiving score with 218 yards from 9 grabs on the year. The running game has been a committee of 4 players seeing the ball the most outside of McClain and Fortin. Brian Battle, Darrian Felix, and Jaren Mangham will all be popping in and out expected to get an equal amount of opportunities throughout the game.
BYU Cougars
Jaren Hall has assumed control of the offense and he has done an amicable job getting it run smoothly enough to be 3 – 0. They are already halfway to a bowl invitation but that is not even in the plans so early. Being undefeated looks nice on paper, but it only means that they will get everyone’s best game because of that same fact. Everyone wants to be on a team that took out a big undefeated program that overlooked them and this is that spot to be careful not to assume an easy win.
They don’t need to be told that they are 3 TD+ favorites to get past a struggling Bulls squad, because they prepared for this team all week and know exactly what is in front of them this weekend. The defense has a ton of issues and it is up to this team to take advantage of those problems.
They certainly have the running game to excel with Tyler Allgeier toting the rock early and often. Allgeier has already taken the ball 65 times and has the only 2 rushing TDs on the season for BYU. In fact, Lopini Katoa is the only other guy to really see the ball in the rushing attack other than Allgeier and Hall.
The passing game sits way back at 100 in the nation, so it is not one that will go out and put up 300+ yards this weekend. Don’t expect any offensive shootouts happening here.

Free Week 4 NCAA Football Pick
BYU should slowly and methodically finish USF in the first half and is expected to cruise from there. I see a 24 – 3 first half turning into a 45 – 11 home win so we take the big points.
