Week 2 college football sees the Jaguars and Falcons meeting at Doyt Perry Stadium.
The South Alabama Jaguars came away with a resounding 31 – 7 win in their opening game against Southern Miss last weekend. In what was a pick ’em game, the Jags influx of new players played a huge role in their opening day success. Jake Bentley was among those newcomers who provided a spark last weekend and the senior transfer QB looks to perform well again this weekend on the road.
The Falcons opened the season with a 38 – 6 loss to Tennessee and are now mired in a 9-game losing streak dating back to 2019. Bowling Green lost the final 3 games of the 2019 season and lost all 5 of their 2020 affairs before losing the season opener last Thursday to the Vols.
The Jaguars are favored by 14 points in this Sun Belt vs. MAC matchup.
South Alabama Jaguars
Since I wrote up last week’s Jags game I obviously know what they have going on this season. I picked those Jags to win and they had me a little concerned early when it was 7 – 0 Southern Miss tbh. All of that concern was put to rest in the 2nd half, however, because Jake Bentley carried the offense and the defense shut it all down from there.
Jake Bentley was among a boatload of players who came to South Alabama in the transfer portal before the season started. The Jags were set to return 17 starters from the 2020 campaign, although a 4 – 7 season wasn’t one to remember.
Kane Wommack got his first FBS head coaching gig with the Jags and he attracted 13 new faces in the portal that all contributed to last week’s win, for the most part. It was as if an entirely new team came to Mobile, and even Major Applewhite was convinced to come run the offense after two years as an analyst with Alabama.
Bentley hooked up 5 times with WR Jalen Tolbert last weekend, as the 2 combined for 168 passing yards with a long of 49 yards. Tolbert never did find the end zone, but Bentley threw for a pair of 1-yard scores in the game.
The run game? Well, not so much to speak of and that will certainly need to balance out over the course of the season. The Jags only put up a combined 38 run yards from Walker and Avery, so the run game certainly needs to be addressed.
Junior CB Daryn Flenord had a huge pick-6 in the game and the Jags pulled in two INTs against Southern Miss last weekend. Not a bad way to start 2021 and it could be getting better. I used the Magic 8-Ball in last weekend’s Jags preview for their team total. Yes, that Team Total of Over 4.5 WIns has a damn good chance of coming to fruition so watch out for the Jags!
The Jags are favored by 2 scores this weekend so we will see how they fare as big favorites on the road. It is one thing to be where they were last weekend in a pick ’em type game with Southern Miss, and it is another to be expected to win by double-digits. Luckily, with as much experience in place as Wommack has in place to work with now, it should not faze this team. The task at hand is to go out and compete and let the chips fall where they may. So far, so good!
Bowling Green Falcons
Falcons head coach Scot Loeffler is 3 – 15 since taking over at Bowling Green, and the prospects of finding wins in 2020 are not good. Murray State is on the schedule next weekend and that might work out fine but beyond that, the Falcons might be underdogs in every game this year.
Bowling Green wasn’t expected to have a great day last Thursday against the Vols being that they were favored to lose by 37 points. A 38 – 6 loss saw the Falcons cover the number but they were punished on the ground and allowed 259 rushing yards. At the same token, Tennessee was committed to the run game and only attempted a single pass in the second half.
Falcons QB Matt McDonald had a decent day going 25 for 38 with 187 passing yards against the Vols defense. However, no play amounted to more than a 24-yard gain whether through the air or the ground.
Nick Mosley rattled off one of those 24-yard rushes, but that doesn’t exactly look good when he carried the ball 8 times for 26 yards overall. The entire team only rushed for 32 yards on 23 carries so that about sums up the run game.

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Pick
It is not a big surprise to see the Jags favored, although 14 points is certainly a statement line. Are the line setters seeing what the Jags are worth or are the Falcons also a bad football team? It might be contingent on both, so the Jags are the play in this tilt on Saturday
4* Free Week 2 NCAA Betting Pick: Jags -14
Jags get the nod as big favorites against Bowling Green on Saturday. I expect a game similar to what we saw last weekend, so let’s call for a 38 – 14 win for South Alabama.
