Week 4 college football sees the Mustangs and Horned Frogs meet at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
A pair of undefeated squads make their way to Amon G. Carter Stadium to square off on Saturday with the Iron Skillet on the line! Oh, they may be seen in different conferences but make no mistake that these two programs have known each other for a loooong time! Where were you in 1915? Well, none of us were around for that 1st meeting but these two programs have quite the history between them.
51 – 41 – 7! TCU leads the all-time series and had taken the last 7 meetings until their 2019 affair which SMU took, 41- 38 right here in this building.
Buckle up sunshine because this oughta be a damn good one in the Lone Star State with old friends hooking up again. Not only bragging rights be on the line but one program will stay unbeaten and the other will be dealt their first loss of 2021.
The Horned Frogs are favored by 9 points in this AAC vs. Big 12 matchup.
SMU Mustangs
Hi, my name is Tanner Mordecai and I have done something that no one else has done in over 20 years… Throw the ball in the end zone 16 times through only 3 games! Productivity to the max so far for the Oklahoma transfer who came up with a monster throw last weekend to boost the Stangs to 3 – 0.
Mordecai tossed a 33-yard TD on the last play of the game to send the LA Tech fans home stunned as they lost to SMU, 39 – 37, in that fashion. How does 81 for 111 look on paper with 16 TD and only 2 picks and already over 1,000 yards passing? Looks good from here to start the season!
The Mustangs have 13 different pass-catchers and 4 players already over the 170-yard mark. Danny Gray has seen the ball the most with 16 grabs but 7 different dudes have caught a TD pass from Mordecai. Just get open! He’ll find ya!
Ulysses Bently IV is doing just find out of the back-field with a passing game like that, as he is at 250 yards on the ground with one trip to paydirt.
I can only assume that someone in this locker room saw the +9 and it got a whole bunch of Stangs fired up to get here. The line setters are saying can’t win here? Oh, really?
Mordecai has the Stangs ranked 9 in total yards (538.7) and 11 in passing yards (341.7) per game. However, the Mustang defense is sitting at a 122 ranking allowing 316 passing yards a game themselves.
TCU Horned Frogs
It is one thing to be favored, but the Frogs supposedly are going to stomp out SMU this weekend being nearly double-digit favorites in a rivalry game. Yes, SMU is not in the Big 12 or in TCU’s conference anymore, but we all know that means absolutely nothing anymore!
The TCU offense is certainly not putting up the same numbers but they still are ranked 28 in the land in total yards per game (468). Let’s also make it clear that Duquesne was the Horned Frogs’ first opponent and this is not basketball, kids.
So, we’ll take that with a grain of salt because we really cannot justify TCU football taking on Duquesne.
Max Duggan is the guy in town, but I do find it odd that they really didn’t let him get loose in the Duquesne game at all. Those games are the ones you let your young QB learn how to develop but they just ran the ball again and again. Great for Zach Evans but not so great for a team that still gives up too many sacks and needs to work on the air attack where ever possible.
Evans leads the squad with 217 yards from 27 carries and big Max sits right behind him in rushing yards with 80. No one questions his ability to move the chains and use his legs to keep drives alive.
Now that these games are getting bigger and oh, by the way… TEXAS IS ON DECK! This game could be hard to predict as we cannot rely on the passing game nor the O-line to hold up. Many were calling for this offensive line to be in much better shape in 2021 than it was, but I digress. Evans has already seen the ground 3 times and I get that he likes to move around. I still think there is a lot of work to be done and this line of -9 is semi-ridiculous!
