Week 3 college football sees the SMU Mustangs and LA Tech Bulldogs meet at Joe Aillet Stadium.
The SMU Mustangs have gotten off to a 2 – 0 start for the third consecutive season under Sonny Dykes. In fact, the ponies have started the last two campaigns at 5 – 0 before picking up their first loss of the season and they are strongly favored to take this contest being favored by nearly two TDs.
The Mustangs have secured wins over, the bear with me now, North Texas Mean Green and Abilene Christian, so let’s call it what it is. Some weak sauce is what it is!
LA Tech gave Mississippi State all they could handle in a 1-point game in SEC country to start the 2021 campaign. The Bulldogs got their cupcake win when they faced SE Louisiana last weekend, but a 45 – 42 affair doesn’t bode well for a team looking to build momentum.
Remember when these two programs were in the same conference for a minute back at the turn of the century and we had a WAC? LA Tech is 4 – 1 all-time in the series between these two programs but has quite a battle on their hands this weekend!
The Mustangs are favored by -12.5 points in this AAC vs. Conference USA matchup.
SMU Mustangs
Sonny Dykes is right where he wants to be at 2 – 0 and heavily favored on the road in game 3 of the season on the road at LA Tech. The Mustangs will certainly watch the tape of how SELA pretty much had their way with the Bulldogs defense last weekend.
At the same token, the Mustangs have their own issues on defense as they rank 119th against the pass and 103rd in total yards at 419 per game. Uh, they played ABILENE CHRISTIAN AND NORTH TEXAS, baby! If you can’t contain those two incredible offenses, right <<< so sarcastic that is! So, the concern on defense is as it is for both teams coming into this tilt on Saturday.
Tanner Mordecai is 45 of 63 on the young season and has accumulated 11 TD passes with only 2 picks. If he didn’t have a few moments watching film knowing that he has LA Tech this weekend, then he never will all season.
Oh, and how about Ulysses Bentley IV averaging 9.5 yards per run this season on only 20 carries? Yeah, the dude can tote the rock and he is not alone in the backfield.
Then, we get to the wideouts and Grant Calcaterra will likely become the 4th WR over 100 yards for the season when this one is done. (90 yards already)
Danny Gray has picked up 159 yards and found the end zone 3 times.
Rashee Rice has caught 6 balls for 134 yards and Reggie Roberson has exactly 100 yards on 8 receptions.
LA Tech Bulldogs
Opening the season against Mississippi State is certainly a daunting task and it led to the Bulldogs 0 – 1 start to the 2021 campaign. Last weekend was supposed to bring a little relief with an FCS program in town but a 45 – 42 win was the best the Bulldogs could do to reach 1 – 1. Kindly favored by -11.5 over an FCS team, the Bulldogs never held a lead by more than 10 points at any point of the game.
Oh, and don’t look at the stat sheet because on paper the Lions had their way with LA Tech’s defense. SELA pounded LA Tech through the air as their QB put up just under 500 yards of passing offense on the Bulldogs. How does 44 completions of 59 attempts look to you? Yeah, it is amazing LA Tech even got that win because the Lions came in a roarin’ mightily despite the 3 point loss.
So, this line is sitting right about where it should be after seeing how a SELA team pretty much had their way with LA Tech.
Austin Kendall was a pedestrian 19 of 27 for 217 yards with a pick and a score but he certainly got outplayed by Cole Kelley across the field.
Not to mention that SELA committed 10 penalties for another 100 yards of field position on top of fumbling 4 times in a 3 point loss to an FBS program. Who won that game again? LoL I mean is 45 – 42 against an FCS program really a win at all?
