Week 4 college football sees the Spartans and Broncos meet at Waldo Stadium.
San Jose State has to go from Honolulu Hawaii last weekend to Kalamazoo Michigan this weekend… I mean, ouch! Hey, no offense to you Bronco fans out there but uh, you get my drift!?
So, after a 17 – 13 win against Hawaii to start conference play, the Spartans will bounce back out of conference over the next two weekends before returning to MW action. A trip to Kalamazoo and a home game with that scary New Mexico State program will come before the final 7 conference games of 2021.
The Broncos are also 2 – 1 out of the gate with wins over Illinois State and last week’s stunning upset of Pittsburgh as double-digit dogs. Unfortunately, head coach Tim Lester was alerted of a positive covid-19 test and he will now be off the sidelines for this big home game that still shows the Broncos as slight favorites.
The Broncos are favored by a field goal in this MW vs. MAC matchup.
San Jose State Spartans
Nick Starkel did what he is expected to do in big games, and the two TD against Hawaii last weekend was huge to get his team the win on the road. Hawaii is always a tough place to play and for not just football reasons sometimes. It will be interesting how they will talk about going from Honolulu to Kalamazoo on back-to-back weekends, right? Talk about a change of scene, and also a bonus of getting New Mexico State next weekend helps. We all know that no one is looking ahead stresses out about that game on deck, so the goal is clear. Make a WMU team struggle to move the ball as they did with Hawaii last weekend.
Starkel was only 23 for 50, however, and Kairee Robinson only gained 55 yards on the ground to lead the team. Robinson only moved the chains 3 times and had a high of 11 yards on 21 carries. Oh, and both players fumbled the ball in the game, so there is still plenty to work on around Sparty!
Starkel is 63 for 123 this season, and that is barely over 51% of his passes grabbed. The 6 / 4 TD to INT ratio leaves plenty to be desired for an experienced guy in this offense. The difference is Starkel will throw the football to anyone who gets open and he will spread the wealth when he can. He has completed balls to 13 different receivers for 937 passing yards through only 3 games with a respectable 124.8 QBR.
W. Michigan Broncos
Head Coach Tim Lester went from a big celebration after beating Pittsburgh last weekend to being notified he will have to sit out of this weekend’s affair with San Jose State. Monday afternoon, Lester was given the news that his last Covid-19 test was a positive result and that means he will be coaching from afar this weekend.
Coach received his vaccination shots but stated he was feeling symptoms, and you can read all about it on ESPN if you want to learn more about it. So, that is a little concerning that all of the assistants will basically have to come together and navigate the game plan. They will have to announce a semi-interim headman officially, but it will be a group effort from what the team is saying on their home and social pages.
Lester picked up his first power-5 conference win last weekend and that means that QB Kaleb Eleby did too! The dude can ball and his 5 TD to no INT ratio sure is working out nicely but we have reason to be concerned.
Essentially, WMU has 4 receivers and a back that likes to catch the ball to go with Mr. Jefferson out of the back-field. Sean Tyler is second on the squad with 39 carries behind Jefferson’s 50 rush attempts this season. Tyler will be the guy seen going out in the pattern and he has found the end zone once through the air as well from one of his 6 grabs.
Depth is a massive concern, but it will only become a pressing matter if any of their main guys go down. It is rather clear who Lester and his staff is relying on to get things done, so the plan should remain the same.
