Week 7 college football sees the Aztecs and Spartans meet at CEFCU Stadium.
The San Diego State Aztecs moved up a spot to 24th in the country after improving to 5 – 0 last weekend. A 31 – 7 win over New Mexico after a bye week has the Aztecs in good shape as they prepare for the second half of the 2021 campaign.
Favored by nearly double-digits, the Aztecs are expected to cruise to 6 – 0 with a win over a struggling Spartans team that sits at 3 – 3 and 1 – 1 in conference play. A 32 – 14 loss to Colorado State last weekend came with more bad news as Nick Starkel is questionable to go with an arm injury.
This offense is already struggling with him, so I can’t even imagine what it might look like without him if he cannot go on Friday night at home.
That could also be what is inflating this line to -9 towards San Diego State as the public is also concerned about the status of the Spartan QB. Nick Nash will likely be the guy under center for head coach Brent Brennan and he has done a decent job when called upon until last weekend’s disaster of a performance.
The Aztecs are favored by 9 points in this Mountain West Conference matchup.
San Diego State Aztecs
The 24th ranked Aztecs come into San Jose expected to take care of business while jumping out to a 6 – 0 start to 2021.
While the offense has been searching for its starting QB all season, the defense has been the strong point towards the success of this program. Brady Hoak and his DC Kurt Maddix have done a great job together to sure up at least one side of the ball in 2021.
This Aztec defense ranks #2 in all of college football allowing a damn impressive 50 rush yards a game. I said Fitty!
The 270.4 total yards allowed a game has this program at 6th in the country and their 16.6 PPG allowed features this defense at 16th in that category.
Suffice it to say that the running game is being asked to carry the load for OC Jeff Hecklinski this season. Greg Bell is okay with that so just give the dude the damn ball! Bell will go over the 100-carries mark this weekend and his 520 yards far and away leads this squad.
He is not alone back there though, because Keegan Williams, Cance Bell, and Jordan Byrd are all over the century mark themselves.
All 4 backs have combined to find the end zone 11 times while QB Jordon Brookshire accounts for the other 4 scores in the running game.
Brookshire and his counterpart Lucas Johnson have struggled to find a rhythm but they both provide similar assets. While Brookshire has scored 4 times, Johnson is also a 100-yard rusher for this offense making him fifth-best on the depth chart.
Tight end Daniel Bellinger leads this team with 7 grabs for 163 yards, however, and this is simply not good enough. He and fellow TE Jay Rudolph account for 2 of the 4 offensive passing TDs for this offense.
San Jose State Spartans
Sparty QB Nick Nash looked fine against that New Mexico State team in the only game he got to see time in until last weekend’s outing against Colorado State.
We all know that New Mexico State is one shit program, however, so we can’t take much from that outing at all. When a real team was put across the field, aka Colorado State last weekend, we could see his lack of leadership and lack of ability to get the chains moving.
With only 13 first downs all day and a lost fumble with an INT against him as well, Nash found himself pressured and confused more often than not. Only two receivers really were involved with the offense although Hamilton and Neese did both find the end zone.
The two combined to take in 8 of Nash’s 11 total completions from 22 attempts as he ran the ball 11 times as well for 38 yards.
Tyler Nevens only carried the ball 10 times for 48 yards and that about sums up the running game for Sparty last weekend.
Four ugly numbers stand out on the rankings for this team in 2021, in fact, let’s make it five actually.
The defense has caused one single turnover this year and out of 130 teams that puts them at 129th in the country.
Ranked at 114 this offense puts up 333.5 total yards an outing.
The 20.5 PPG has them at 113th and their107 rush yards a game puts this team at 112th in that category. The 7 turnovers also knock this team back to 128th in the land so there’s that to make it 4th ugly offensive number and Starkel has been around for a chunk of that.
