Scarlet Knights vs. Eagles Gameday
Rutgers heads to Alumni Stadium on Friday night to face Boston College with both teams trying to recover from rough season openers. The Scarlet Knights were stunned 37-21 at home by UMass, while the Eagles opened with a 34-15 road loss at Cincinnati. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2.
Rutgers produced 349 total yards against UMass but couldn’t overcome four turnovers. The Scarlet Knights also surrendered 30 consecutive points after KJ Duff’s first-quarter touchdown gave them an early 7-0 lead.
Rutgers will make a quarterback change Friday, with AJ Surace getting the start against Boston College.
Boston College also has plenty to clean up after Cincinnati controlled the middle portion of its opener. The Eagles didn’t score until the third quarter and trailed 24-0 before Evan Dickens finally reached the end zone.
This is also Boston College’s annual Red Bandanna Game on the 25th anniversary of September 11. Rutgers won 22-21 the last time these programs met at Alumni Stadium in 2022.

Boston College is favored at home, but the market has tightened considerably. The Eagles opened around -6.5 before moving to -3.5, with Rutgers getting the field goal plus the hook. The total is sitting at 54.5.
Neither team gave bettors much reason for confidence in its opener.
Rutgers entered the UMass game as a massive favorite before losing outright by 16 points. Boston College also fell by double digits at Cincinnati, where the Eagles were held scoreless until 2:01 remained in the third quarter.
The previous meeting adds some history to Friday’s matchup. Rutgers erased a 21-10 deficit at Alumni Stadium in 2022 and scored the winning touchdown with 2:43 remaining for a 22-21 victory.
Eagles Stats
Boston College finished with 375 total yards against Cincinnati, but much of its production came after falling well behind. The Eagles generated 223 passing yards and 152 on the ground while converting seven of 16 third downs.
Mason McKenzie accounted for most of that offense himself.
McKenzie completed 18 passes for 223 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also led Boston College with 78 rushing yards, giving the Eagles a legitimate dual-threat option even though Cincinnati kept them off the scoreboard for most of three quarters.
The running backs provided some support.
Evan Dickens rushed for 47 yards and scored Boston College’s first touchdown, while Bo MacCormack III added 40 yards. Javarius Green led the receivers with six catches for 74 yards, and Johnathan Montague Jr. turned two receptions into 55 yards and a late touchdown.
Defensively, the biggest problem was stopping Cincinnati on the ground. The Bearcats rushed for 254 yards and scored three touchdowns with their quarterback, repeatedly extending drives with the running game. Boston College now returns home looking for a much cleaner performance.

Scarlet Knights Stats
Rutgers moved the football through the air against UMass but couldn’t overcome its mistakes. The Scarlet Knights finished with 319 passing yards, while their running backs struggled to create consistent production. Four turnovers helped turn an early lead into a stunning home defeat.
KJ Duff was easily the brightest spot.
Duff caught nine passes for a career-high 196 yards and three touchdowns. He scored from 23 yards in the first quarter before adding touchdown receptions of 57 and 40 yards during Rutgers’ fourth-quarter comeback attempt.
The ground game never found the same rhythm.
Antwan Raymond led Rutgers with 42 rushing yards, but the Scarlet Knights finished with only 30 net yards on the ground. That imbalance became more damaging once Rutgers fell behind and UMass could focus on defending the passing game.
The defense also struggled to get off the field. UMass rushed for more than 200 yards and controlled the game after falling behind early, leaving Rutgers with significant work to do before Big Ten play begins against USC next week.

Scarlet Knights vs. Eagles QB Matchup
Mason McKenzie remains Boston College’s starter after making his first appearance of the season at Cincinnati. His mobility was one of the few consistent problems the Eagles created for the Bearcats, and that dimension could be important against a Rutgers defense that had trouble containing the run.
Rutgers enters Friday with a much more significant quarterback storyline.
AJ Surace will start after Dylan Lonergan suffered an injury during the fourth quarter against UMass and was unable to practice this week. Lonergan may be available in an emergency role, but Greg Schiano has confirmed the offense belongs to Surace against Boston College.
Surace provided Rutgers with a spark when he entered the opener.
The sophomore completed six of nine passes for 77 yards and a touchdown, including a 40-yard scoring strike to Duff. He was already involved in a close offseason quarterback competition, so this isn’t a situation where Rutgers is turning to an inexperienced option who was never expected to play.
McKenzie has the advantage of remaining in the same role for a second straight week, while Surace gets his first start of the season on the road. How quickly Rutgers’ new starter settles in could determine whether the Scarlet Knights can exploit a Boston College team that has its own Week 1 problems to fix.

Here is my Scarlet Knights Eagles free pick: I’m taking Rutgers +3.5 Friday night. The quarterback change adds uncertainty, but I’m willing to grab the points with a team that still created explosive plays during an ugly opener.

Rutgers doesn’t need Surace to be a star to stay inside this number.
Neither team showed enough in Week 1 for me to want to lay more than a field goal.

Rutgers won 22-21 on its last trip to Alumni Stadium. I’m not leaning on a four-year-old result to make this bet, but I see another game that can stay tight into the fourth quarter.
A one-score game wouldn’t surprise me at all. Give me Rutgers +3.5.
