Spiders vs. Wolfpack Gameday
Week 2 continues Friday night with No. 23 Richmond visiting NC State at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on ESPNU. This will be the Wolfpack’s home opener after beginning the season against Virginia.
Richmond arrives at 2-0 after beating Bucknell 35-14 and Howard 28-21. The Spiders are also 1-0 in their first season as a member of the Patriot League, making the original conference information outdated.
Richmond brings a 2-0 record to Raleigh, while NC State is still looking for its first win.
NC State opened its season with a 34-8 loss to Virginia. The Wolfpack produced only 168 total yards and 10 first downs while allowing 413 yards. Returning home against an FCS opponent gives them an immediate opportunity to reset.
NC State leads the all-time series 18-1-1. The most recent meeting was much tighter, with the Wolfpack escaping 23-21 in 2013.

Richmond Spiders vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack Odds & Last 5
NC State is a massive favorite in its home opener, with the Wolfpack laying 30.5 points. Richmond gets the same number as the road underdog. The total is sitting at 48.5.
The records create an interesting contrast for such a large spread.
Richmond has already collected two victories, beating Bucknell by 21 before holding off Howard by seven. NC State has played only once and never recovered after falling behind Virginia early. The Wolfpack trailed 17-0 at halftime before eventually losing by 26.
Wolfpack Stats
NC State’s season opener couldn’t have gone much worse offensively. The Wolfpack finished with 168 total yards and averaged only 3.3 yards per play. Virginia held them to 92 passing yards and 76 on the ground.
CJ Bailey struggled to get the passing game moving.
Bailey completed 12 of 23 passes for 84 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Backup Will Wilson went 3-for-4 for eight yards. Tight end Justin Joly Vander Ploog led NC State with 25 receiving yards.
The ground game didn’t provide much relief.
Bailey actually led the Wolfpack with 33 rushing yards, while Jayden Scott was held to 20. NC State converted only four of 13 third downs and possessed the ball for just over 22 minutes. Those numbers made it difficult to establish any offensive rhythm.
Defensively, the Wolfpack allowed Virginia to rush for 258 yards and average 6.6 yards per carry. NC State did force one turnover and held the Cavaliers to three third-down conversions. The defense will expect a much cleaner night against Richmond.

Spiders Stats
Richmond’s actual start has been considerably better than the original numbers suggested. The Spiders beat Bucknell 35-14 before going on the road and defeating Howard 28-21. They are averaging 31.5 points through two games.
The passing game has been the biggest offensive strength.
Ashten Snelsire threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns against Bucknell, then followed with 261 yards and three more scores at Howard. He has yet to throw an interception. Richmond has averaged 210 passing yards through its first two games.
Quanye Veney emerged as the leading receiver against Howard.
Veney caught seven passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Sean Clarke added a 29-yard scoring reception. Bryce Allen had provided the big plays one week earlier, finishing with 106 yards and two touchdowns against Bucknell.
Richmond has also played solid defense, allowing 213.5 yards per game through two weeks. The Spiders held Bucknell to 187 total yards before limiting Howard to 240. That defensive start gives them something positive to carry into a much tougher matchup.

Spiders vs. Wolfpack QB Matchup
CJ Bailey remains the starting quarterback for NC State after a difficult opener against Virginia. The junior completed just over half of his attempts and couldn’t get the Wolfpack into the end zone through the air. Friday gives him a much friendlier matchup for a bounce-back performance.
Bailey has shown considerably more ability than that opener suggested.
He threw for 2,413 yards and 17 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2024 despite starting only nine games. That experience gives NC State reason to expect improvement. Will Wilson remains another option behind him if the game gets out of hand.
Richmond’s quarterback situation is much clearer than originally projected.
Ashten Snelsire has started both games and directed an offense that scored on three of its first four possessions against Howard. He has been particularly effective creating touchdowns without giving defenses interceptions. His ability to avoid major mistakes will become much more important against an ACC defense.
Snelsire doesn’t need to match Bailey throw for throw for Richmond to compete against the spread. Keeping the Spiders out of bad situations and sustaining a few scoring drives would help shorten the game. NC State still owns the talent advantage at quarterback and across the roster.
Richmond Spiders vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack bottom line: NC State has the substantial talent advantage, but unbeaten Richmond arrives with much better early-season form than the original matchup data suggested.
Richmond Spiders vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack Football Betting Trends
- Richmond has a 40% success rate against the spread in their last 5 games as an underdog.
- The Spiders are 1-3 against the spread after a loss in their last 4 games.
- Richmond has not won any of their last 3 games straight up as an underdog.
- Also, North Carolina State has won 85.7% of their last 28 games straight up as a favorite.
- The Wolfpack has covered the spread in all 4 of their recent home games.
- Additionally, NC State is 6-2 against the spread after a loss in their last 8 games.
Spiders Wolfpack Free Pick: Richmond Spiders +30.5
Here is my Spiders Wolfpack free pick: I’m taking the Spiders +30.5 as my play Friday night. NC State should be much better in its home opener, but laying more than four touchdowns is asking a lot from an offense that has plenty to prove.
Richmond isn’t arriving in Raleigh as a team searching for answers. The Spiders are 2-0, and Ashten Snelsire has thrown six touchdowns without an interception, giving them a passing game capable of stealing a few drives.
That’s important when I’m getting 30.5 points.
Richmond doesn’t need to threaten the upset to make this big number uncomfortable.
The Wolfpack will have a major advantage in size and depth, and I expect a much sharper performance after the Virginia loss. Still, covering this spread requires NC State to create separation and keep adding to it.
Richmond has already shown it can start quickly, protect the football through the air and make enough defensive stops to stay in control. Against an NC State offense coming off a rough opener, that gives my betting angle some teeth.
A 34-10 or 38-14 type of game works perfectly. NC State can cruise at home without coming close to covering.
I’ll gladly take the points with Richmond +30.5.
