Week 2 college football sees the Boilermakers and Huskies meeting at Pratt & Whitney Stadium.
Randy Edsall? Enough already, it is time for you to go! Finally, the UConn AD announced this week that Randy Edsall is no longer the head coach at the University of Connecticut effective immediately! Accepting his resignation was the easiest decision an AD could make as UConn football has fallen so far off the map.
The loss to Fresno State to open the season wasn’t all that shocking but last week’s loss to Holy Cross? Yeah, even I said to my friends that Edsall being a head coach at the FBS level is hysterical and he needed to go. I am glad to see they finally decided on it because you just can’t allow failure to be acceptable. Hey, I get it, not everyone is going to fly high and succeed every season but what has happened in Storrs lately is just a losing mentality. When you have zero expectations to even win 1 damn game?
The UConn team total was 2.5 wins in 2021 and after an 0 – 2 start and the schedule ahead it will be a tall order to win 3 games this season.
Meanwhile, Purdue cruised to a 30- 21 win over Oregon State favored by a TD last weekend. The Boilers just need to walk onto the field, do barely enough to win, and then go play a tough Notre Dame team next weekend on the road.
The Boilermakers are favored by 33 points in this Big Ten vs. Independent matchup.
Purdue Boilermakers
The Boilermakers have obviously heard the news about UConn’s head coach stepping down, so Jeff Brohm just needs to keep his team composed and have them ready to kick UConn’s ass.
Listen, you can talk about being nice and not taking advantage of a team when they are down but let’s make no mistake… There is no crying in football and Purdue has a damn football game to win on the road. No coach in any conference sees a road game as an easy win no matter the line or the situation.
It is no given that UConn will just lie down and wave a white flag so you show up to fight like hell for Ws.
The Boilers got off to a great start last weekend taking down the Beavers on the strength of Jack Plummer’s arm. After a 2-win season in 2020, the goal this year was to turn that all around and make 2021 a big season in West Lafayette. The oddsmakers listed Purdue with an O/U Team Total Wins # at 5 this year, and they have Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Iowa all on the road.
Could Purdue overlook UConn because the Irish are on deck next weekend? I think we all know that if Purdue struggles in the last on Saturday every outlet will use the reasoning of looking ahead to blame. We know this.
I also think we all know that teams plan for every team on the schedule in small ways throughout the off-season and Spring practices. We work on this so when we play this team it will be effective… We work on that so when we play that team we will be effective. As the season gets closer coaches to start to focus on the immediate games in front of them and then take the schedule as it comes. It is not rocket science, it’s just preparation, baby!
Planning for UConn might seem easy enough so the game plan for Purdue will be to control the ball, eat up the clock and get out of Storrs with any type of win.
Jack Plummer can certainly have a nice day as he did last weekend finding two different receivers for over 100 yards. The law firm of Bell and Durham each busted out big afternoons against Oregon State, although Payne Durham was the one finding the end zone twice.
Zander Horvath Jr. saw the lion’s share of the carries in the win toting the rock 21 times for 81 yards and a score.
UConn Huskies
The Huskies have finally gotten rid of Randy Edsall so maybe someone can come to save the program in 2021. As of Thursday morning, we still have not heard who is going to be taking over the head coaching duties with the Huskies.
After Saturday’s loss to Holy Cross, 38 – 28, Edsall posted on Sunday that he would stay for the season and retire at the end of the campaign. That all changed on Monday when he handed in his resignation and parted ways with the program.
So, a new start and a new optimism might be coming to Storrs depending on who the school can convince to take over the program. Ironically, Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney is among the rumors to leave Massachussettes and come to Connecticut but he just took that job this season. It will be tough to find a head coach when the season has already started because obviously, people are already working somewhere else.
The announcement could come as early as Thursday night into Friday, but the uphill battle will still remain for whoever takes over. This is a bad team playing now as an Independent albeit an FBS program nonetheless. Regardless, so much work will have to go into fixing a program that has fallen so far so quickly. That also makes it difficult to bring in a high-profile name, so it might be a former player or a former assistant to come on board. We will know soon enough.
So far on the field, the stats are bad… like, really bad!
Jack Zergiotis was named the starting QB and he isn’t exactly putting up any numbers worth talking about. Through 2 games Zergiotis has completed 44% of his passes (29 of 65) with 235 passing yards and a 3/3 TD to INT ratio.
Senior RB Kevin Mensah is the shining light of the offense and we can only surmise that whomever takes over will plan to be handing the ball to him early and often. Mensah put up back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns in 2018 & 19 and is about as reliable of a back that you could ask for.
Defensively? Well, 83 points allowed already won’t cut it so we will see if DC Lou Spanos keeps his job when the new coach comes in. I know Spanos has the experience and is seen as a positive, but is he really? Granted, the players have to do their part but this defense under Spanos really has been terrible.
The best thing about 2020 for the UConn Huskies? THEY DIDN’T LOSE ANY GAMES LoL (Obviously they played none either)

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Pick
I think this total is a little high considering UConn won’t likely be contributing much to it. I can see this as a 45 – 10 type of game and the line setters are basically pointing to that too.
So, the decision comes in either laying the big points or deciding on this total. Purdue does not need to go into Storrs and destroy Uconn and they certainly just want a win no matter the final score.
Teams don’t look at the total and think there is a need to hit a certain number like we all hope they see it. That is what makes totals betting tough because winning the game is their only objective, by how much is our objective, obviously.
4* Free Week 2 NCAA Betting Pick:
With that said, I like this total to stay Under 57.5. Even if that 45 – 10 scoreline comes we hit the under so that is my call here.
