Ducks vs. Cowboys Gameday
No. 2 Oregon heads to Stillwater on Saturday for its first road game of the season against Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium. The Ducks are 1-0 after surviving Boise State 34-27, while the Cowboys are 0-1 following a 24-10 loss at Tulsa. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN.
Oregon opened the season with a win over Boise State.
Oregon makes its first trip to Stillwater after hammering Oklahoma State 69-3 last season.
Oklahoma State had a much different opener under new head coach Eric Morris. The Cowboys generated 27 first downs and possessed the ball for more than 31 minutes, but four turnovers and several empty trips into Tulsa territory proved costly.
Oregon has won both previous meetings between these programs. The Ducks beat Oklahoma State 42-31 in the 2008 Holiday Bowl before last season’s 66-point blowout in Eugene.

Oregon is a massive road favorite in Stillwater. The Ducks are laying 22.5 points, with Oklahoma State getting the same number at home, while the total is sitting at 57.5. Oregon is priced well above -2000 on the moneyline.
The market has moved toward the Cowboys since the opening numbers appeared.
Oregon was laying closer to four touchdowns before the spread dropped into the low 20s. The total has also fallen several points, putting more emphasis on whether Oklahoma State can contribute enough offense against the Ducks.
Last year’s meeting explains some of the original respect for Oregon. The Ducks scored 41 points in the second quarter alone and finished with 631 total yards in their 69-3 victory, while holding Oklahoma State to 211.
Cowboys Stats
Oklahoma State moved the football better against Tulsa than the final score suggests. The Cowboys recorded 27 first downs, converted five of 16 third downs and ran 88 offensive plays. Finishing those possessions was the problem.
Drew Mestemaker handled nearly all of the passing workload.
Mestemaker completed 29 of 49 attempts for 241 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked twice as Oklahoma State struggled to protect him after losing starting left tackle Jacob Sexton on its fifth offensive play.
Caleb Hawkins provided the most consistent production on the ground.
Hawkins carried 18 times for 79 yards and added six receptions for 29 yards. Wyatt Young led the Cowboys with 84 receiving yards, including a 27-yard catch that was Oklahoma State’s only offensive play longer than 20 yards.
The Cowboys hurt themselves repeatedly with four turnovers and three failed fourth-down attempts. Four possessions reached Tulsa territory without producing points, leaving Oklahoma State with only 10 points despite controlling the ball for 31:05.

Ducks Stats
Oregon’s offense produced 497 total yards against Boise State, but the Ducks needed a fourth-quarter rally to escape with the victory. They threw for 378 yards while adding another 119 on the ground, averaging 7.9 yards per offensive play.
Dante Moore delivered when Oregon needed him.
Moore completed 28 of 37 passes for a career-high 378 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His 62-yard touchdown pass to Dakorien Moore in the fourth quarter gave Oregon the lead for good.
Jeremiah McClellan was the biggest threat downfield.
McClellan caught six passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, including receptions of 50 and 51 yards. Jordon Davison rushed 12 times for 90 yards and a score, giving the Ducks enough balance to keep Boise State from concentrating entirely on the passing game.
Oregon’s defense allowed only 274 total yards despite giving up 27 points. The Ducks limited Boise State to 93 rushing yards, recorded three sacks and held the Broncos to four conversions on 15 third-down attempts.

Ducks vs. Cowboys QB Matchup
Dante Moore and Drew Mestemaker enter Saturday from opposite ends of the Week 1 spectrum. Moore directed a comeback against a quality Boise State opponent, while Mestemaker spent much of his Oklahoma State debut trying to overcome turnovers and protection problems.
Moore brings the bigger downfield threat into this matchup.
Oregon produced three passing plays of at least 50 yards in its opener, the most in the country through Week 1. Moore spread the football among several experienced targets and protected it despite throwing 37 times.
Mestemaker’s volume remains important for Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys asked him to throw 49 times at Tulsa, and his 241 yards extended his streak of 200-yard passing games to 16, the longest active run in the FBS. His challenge Saturday is avoiding the mistakes that helped turn productive drives into empty possessions.
That job becomes tougher without Sexton, who suffered a lower-leg injury against Tulsa and has been ruled out for the season. Oklahoma State must find a way to protect Mestemaker against a defense that already generated three sacks in its opener.
Oregon Ducks vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys bottom line: Oregon brings the more explosive offense and a major talent advantage, while Oklahoma State needs cleaner quarterback play and better protection to make its home opener competitive.

Here is my Ducks Cowboys free pick: I’m playing Over 57.5 in Stillwater. Oregon showed enough explosiveness against Boise State, and Oklahoma State left points on the field at Tulsa.
Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, with Oregon producing three completions of at least 50 yards. That big-play ability matters when I’m asking a favorite to help carry this total.
Oklahoma State doesn’t need to trade touchdowns all afternoon.
Oregon’s passing game can create points quickly enough to put this total under pressure.
Drew Mestemaker threw 49 passes against Tulsa and moved the Cowboys into scoring territory repeatedly. Four Oklahoma State drives ended without points after crossing into Tulsa territory, so the 10-point final doesn’t tell the whole story.
Oregon has enough vertical juice to make 57.5 reachable even if the Cowboys aren’t especially efficient.
The matchup up front is a concern. Starting left tackle Jacob Sexton is lost for the season. Still, Mestemaker has thrown for at least 200 yards in 16 straight games, giving the Cowboys opportunities to contribute.
Last year’s 69-3 demolition isn’t my reason for betting this Over. Oregon’s current passing attack is.
I see the Ducks pushing into the 40s and Oklahoma State doing enough at home to finish the job. Give me Over 57.5.
