Myrtle Beach Bowl college football sees the Monarchs and Golden Hurricane meeting at Brooks Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane are favored by 9.5 points over Old Dominion in this Myrtle Beach Bowl matchup.
The Monarchs really aren’t concerned about much of that because being in a bowl game is reason enough to celebrate this 2nd-year of head coach Ricky Rhane’s tenure. The dude finally gets his shot to be the head coach a year ago and the entire Monarch’s campaign got canceled before he couldn’t get started.
Let’s keep in mind that this program was 1 – 11 in 2019 and totally missed out of competition 2020. Getting the Monarchs to only their second bowl game in program history… Priceless!
Tulsa and Philip Montgomery are back in the post-season for a second straight season after their 6 – 3 campaign a year ago. Last year ended with a 28 – 26 loss to Miss State in the Armed Forces Bowl and a 6 – 6 campaign is not one filled with an overwhelming amount of success.
By the same token, both of these outfits got to take advantage of earning an FCS victory to get to bowl eligible status now that we have so many bowl games to play.
Old Dominion Monarchs
Well, how can Ricky Rahne not be thrilled to have gotten his program to a post-season game? In what is officially his first year as a coach for a team that actually played a season this time, he took on a 1 – 11 program, had to lose a lot of players, and wait a whole bunch of weeks to finally get a team on the field.
The only other time Old Dominion was seen in a bowl game came back in 2016 when the 9 – 3 Monarchs went on to earn a 10th win by beating Eastern Michigan in the Bahamas Bowl, 24 – 20.
So, this is certainly a successful season for Rahne and his men but they are indeed a big underdog in Myrtle Beach or this second edition of the Bowl played at Brooks Stadium.
The Monarchs were an impressive 9 – 3 ATS in their 12 games this season and in case you are just now noticing that ODU is a bowl game they are hot coming into Myrtle Beach!
This program lost to Western Kentucky, 43 – 20, on October 16 and the Monarchs were left with a 1 – 6 record. Yogi Berra would be proud enough to say, “It ain’t over till it’s over” because the next 5 games were all wins to land this bowl opportunity.
A perfect 5 – 0 over the final stretch of the season has obviously given this program a renewed sense of confidence and the offense certainly found their legs at the right time.
Over the final 5-win stretch this team averaged 36 points a game which brought their season average up to 28.5 PPG that now ranks 68th in the country. That was not the case through the first 7 games, to say the least!
Why did this happen all of sudden? Oh, the reason is clear and obvious to anyone paying attention to college football this year. Hayden Wolff happened and a freshman QB came in to save the campaign.
It’s as simple as that after he got his first shot to really make an impression in the loss to mentioned Western Kentucky team that put a whoopin’ on this team.
Wolff is now up to 1,757 passing yards with 10 TD passes and Al Jennings III needs only 8 yards to be a 1,000-yard receiver this year. Let’s go on a limb and say the dude will get that done in Myrtle Beach.
Tight End Zach Kuntz was well utilized as he leads this team with 71 receptions matching the 5TD with Jennings along with 674 yards to add to his ledger.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Tulsa needed to, at least, get back to a bowl season for Philip Montgomery as year-7 was supposed to bring more success than it ended up producing. This team was 6 – 3 in 2020 and had nearly everyone back on offense to account for some big wins in 2021.
The offense did rank 37th in total yards per game putting up 434 a contest but the 26.1 PPG leaves this Tulsa program back at 84th in scoring.
The Golden Hurricane also comes into Myrtle Beach with a little bit of a hot streak having won their final 3 games of the regular season. After the 28 – 20 loss to Cincinnati, it looked like this Tulsa program might be finding bowl eligibility in 2021, but wins over Tulane, Temple, and SMU earned this program 6 wins.
Just like ODU, Tulsa got to play a cupcake game against an FCS program… Wait, OOPS! The loss to UC-Davis to kick off the 2021 season really left a bad taste on campus and even with that loss and 6 – 6 the committee has to weigh some options. It’s one thing to schedule an FCS team and get your simple win but when you don’t even get that W? Phew, and yet here they are!
Amazingly, this team almost beat that Oklahoma State team that everyone watched play extremely well this year so to go from one extreme to the other like that made this season even more confusing for Hurricane fans, alumni, coaches… Athletic Directors and such!
We can go on a limb that had he not gotten this bowl berth the 2-year contract Philip Montgomery just signed might not have happened so easily.
There is no QB issue in Tulsa because Davis Brin took every snap of every game for this Tulsa program. Brin is at 2,969 yards and hopefully will topple that 3K mark that everyone wants to see.
Brin also has a receiver on the cusp of a 1,000-yard campaign as Josh Johnson is at 985 with a massive team lead of 75 receptions. His closest teammate, JuanCarlos Santana is playing his last game in a Tulsa uniform and he has 44 receptions for 599 yards behind Johnson.
