Week 3 college football sees the Cowboys and Broncos meet at Albertsons Stadium.
The Cowboys head to the great Northwest and the team is hoping to have their starting QB back to take on the Boise State Broncos in Idaho. Spencer Sanders was unable to play last weekend after covid-19 protocols had him home watching the game. Sanders is back at practice and is expected to be back on the field this weekend.
The Broncos have split their first two games of 2021 under new head coach Andy Avalos. They lost to UCF opening weekend and toppled UTEP a weekend ago as Hank Bachmeier gets more comfortable in the pocket as he sees more time on the field. Avalos was a former player and assistant here at Boise State which certainly aided his quest to land his first head coaching gig.
The Broncos are favored by 4 points in this Big 12 vs. MWC matchup.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys have been strongly favored in their first two games that have resulted in wins so all is fine and good… Or, the Cowboys barely escaped either game with wins and there is more concern in Stillwater than confidence.
Oklahoma State was favored by 34 points in their season opener against FCS Missouri State and a 23 – 16 win sure doesn’t have Mike Gundy oozing with confidence. Last weekend, the Cowboys were double-digit favs against Tulsa and a 28 – 23 win saw the dog cover again and almost win, in fact.
So, the Cowboys are now underdogs on the road as Boise has the line setters favoritism by 4 points in this tilt. We can assume it has to do with the Mike Gundy and this QB situation he has to deal with. Spencer Sanders played the first game and sat out of the 2nd game due to Covid related concerns. Sanders is expected back this weekend, however, so he will likely be handed the reigns again this weekend.
Usually, the stats can be skewed early in the season with all of the FCS programs involved with FBS programs. Rankings are certainly tough to account for as well, but the Cowboys do not look good on paper nor have they looked much better with the eye test. Oklahoma State ranks 109th in rushing offense and 94th in total yards through two games.
Shane Illingworth had to make the spot start last weekend for the Cowboys and he is certainly not as fleet afoot as Sanders. Illingworth completed 22 of his 40 pass attempts and put up 315 passing yards to go with a TD and a pick.
Boise State Broncos
The Broncos have their guy with Hank Bachmeier under center and because of last season, he already has 15 starts in this Sophomore campaign. Bachmeier has 604 passing yards with a 4 – 1 TD to INT ratio and averages 9 yards per pass attempt.
Tyler Crowe is the leading rusher for the team but he has only carried the ball 7 times for 45 yards. Cyrus Habibi-Likio and Andrew Van Buren each have 15 carries but they have combined for only 63 yards although Van Buren has found the end zone 3 times.
Bachmeier has completed passes to 10 different pass catchers including both of his RBs just mentioned. Boise’s leading receiver is Khalil Shakir who already has totaled 257 yards on 12 receptions while scoring twice.
Tyric LeBeauf already has two interceptions on defense and JL Skinner has forced two big fumbles in the early going. From there, the defense really hasn’t done much to impress us yet as they are ranked under 100th in nearly every defensive category because of the UCF game. Boise ranks 110 in total yards allowed and passing yards allowed.
