Week 6 college football sees the Sooners and Horns meet at the Cotton Bowl.
Oh, it’s just another ho-hum Red River rivalry game again, pfffft!
OR! Yeah, not so much because who knows what will happen after what we saw unfold a year ago in this very Stadium when Texas and Oklahoma squared off!
You remember, right? Does the quadruple overtime 53 – 45 Texas win with #11 running the show for the Hook em Horns in his final campaign ring a bell? Oh, baby, can we hope they replicate such a game in 2021?
Yes, yes we can, so here we go again! Buckle up, Sunshine!
Both teams are ranked inside the top-25 with the 5 – 0 Sooners sitting at 6th and 4 – 1 Horns locked in the 21 position. Obviously, Mr. Ehlinger won be there to save the Texas bacon again. Casey Thompson will have his hands full against the OU defense that ranks 7th against the run this season but the Sooners are susceptible through the air.
The Sooners have won 6 of the last 8 Rid River rivalry games but the Horns hold the all-time edge, 62 – 49 – 5!
IT’S A SHOWDOWN AT HIGH NOON WITH ESPN COLLEGE GAMEDAY IN THE HOUSE! What will Lee Corso do with the headgear in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday? I will tell you what mascot head he should put on at the bottom of this piece because you don’t want to be the guy that is all hat and no cattle! HOWDY!!
The Sooners are favored by 3 points in this Big 12 Red River rivalry matchup.
You can’t ask for much more than a 5 – 0 start to any campaign, but it all comes down to the Red River rivalry! The Sooners have had the recent edge in the series despite last year’s wild result that the Horns won in 4 overtimes.
That Sooners run defense is only allowing 83.6 ypg and they used that to their advantage again against Kansas State in the 37 – 31 win last weekend. Granted, the score makes it look closer than it was, but OU basically could have cruised but chose to lay push the pedal down saving juice for this matchup, maybe?
Skylar Thompson’s stats for Kansas State looked great against the OU defense, but he had to throw the ball because the Sooners stuff everything upfront that the Wildcats had to offer. Deuce Vaughn led the team with only 51 rush yards for K State, and as a team, they barely scratched out 100 yards on the ground.
OU tailback Kennedy Brooks had a nice day with a score and 91 yards from 15 carries in the win. Brooks has made 4 trips to the end zone overall this season with 318 yards while Eric Gray also has contributed 249 yards from 49 carries to support the ground efforts.
Spencer Rattler is having one damn decent campaign with a f**king gaudy 76.3 completion percentage this year. He has thrown the ball to the wrong team 4 times and has been sacked 8 times, however, but he will have no problem using those legs of his to move the chains. Rattler is 3rd on the depth chart running the ball with 95 yards and a pair of scores with the boots on!
Depth might be a bit of a concern as the season goes on because those three dudes are doing the bulk of the damage, if not all of it really. Keeping those three on the field will be paramount to the OU success going forward.
Well, Big Sam won’t be saving anything for Texas this weekend, but the Horns know they will be underdogs in this rivalry game. Losing to Arkansas early in the season was a setback that they have since over-came with 3 straight wins coming into this matchup with OU.
Let’s be honest here and say that had the Texas Tech defense not been a complete mess, the Horns offense would not rank anywhere near where they currently are. If we were to take out that game and look at Thompson’s other stats, we see some fugly stuff that comes nowhere near the production from a season ago.
The Horns rank 5th in offensive rushing yards because they are running the ball like never before. As a team, the Horns have amassed 1343 with 17 TD bursts in the run game. Bijon Robinson is already over 100 rush attempts through only 5 games and has 652 yards to his credit.
The Horns already have 5 different players over 100-yards on the ground and all of them have found their way to the end zone as well.
The Texas defense is where my concerns are, being that you see them ranked well in the bottom half in the country of most major categories. The Horns rank 82nd in total yards allowed (396.8), 95th against the run (172.4 p/g), and with only 3 caused turnovers, they are way back in 91st in the land which allows 24 ppg as well.
Also of a little concern is the depth of the wide receivers as you see only 4 players really are involved with the passing game. Whittington, Worthy, Robinson, and Moore account for just about dan near all of the grabs and yards that help this offense move the ball.
