Sooners vs. Wolverines Gameday
Oklahoma heads to Michigan Stadium for one of Saturday’s biggest nonconference games, with both teams sitting at 1-0. The No. 10 Sooners opened with a 51-0 demolition of UTEP, while Michigan needed a wild finish to escape Western Michigan 13-12. Kickoff is set for noon ET on FOX.
Oklahoma controlled its opener from the start, scoring touchdowns on its first two offensive possessions before adding an 88-yard punt-return score. The Sooners eventually finished with 401 total yards and scored on each of their first eight possessions.
Michigan escaped Week 1 on a 47-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan as time expired.
The Wolverines entered their opener ranked No. 16 but dropped out of the AP Top 25 after struggling with Western Michigan. They were outgained 291-276 and possessed the ball for less than 20 minutes, yet Bryce Underwood and Buchanan connected on the final play to steal the win.
Oklahoma won 24-13 when these programs met in Norman last season. Michigan gets the rematch at the Big House, where Kyle Whittingham will try to clean up a three-turnover performance from his debut as Wolverines head coach.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Michigan Wolverines Odds & Last 5
Oklahoma is the road favorite after the dramatically different Week 1 performances. The Sooners are around -220 on the moneyline, with Michigan around +185, while Oklahoma is laying 5.5 points. The total is sitting at 43.5.
Those numbers put plenty of weight on what happened in the openers.
Oklahoma led UTEP 21-0 after one quarter and 27-0 at halftime before cruising through the second half. Michigan had a much different experience, trailing Western Michigan 12-7 in the final seconds before its last-play touchdown turned a potential upset loss into a one-point victory.
Last year’s meeting was also controlled by the Sooners. Oklahoma held Michigan scoreless over the final 23-plus minutes and pulled away for a 24-13 victory, giving the Sooners a 2-0 record in the all-time series.
Wolverines Stats
Michigan’s offense had trouble sustaining drives against Western Michigan. The Wolverines finished with 276 total yards, converted only three of 10 third downs and had the football for 19:52. Three turnovers made the afternoon even more difficult.
Bryce Underwood accounted for both Michigan touchdowns.
The sophomore completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was also Michigan’s leading rusher with 47 yards on nine carries, including a one-yard touchdown on the opening possession.
JJ Buchanan delivered the play everyone remembered.
The Utah transfer caught six passes for 126 yards in his Michigan debut, including the 47-yard touchdown as time expired. Jordan Marshall added 44 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Savion Hiter managed 15 yards on five attempts.
Michigan’s defense did enough to keep the Wolverines alive despite the offensive mistakes. Western Michigan threw for only 89 yards, while the Wolverines recorded two sacks and allowed no offensive touchdowns. The Broncos scored all 12 of their points on four field goals.

Sooners Stats
Oklahoma couldn’t have asked for a cleaner start to its season. The Sooners blanked UTEP 51-0 and held the Miners to 198 total yards, with only 86 coming through the air. Oklahoma also forced two turnovers and never allowed UTEP inside the red zone.
John Mateer was sharp before getting an early exit.
Mateer completed 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns before leaving late in the third quarter. He connected with Isaiah Sategna III twice for scores, including a 55-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 34-0.
Lloyd Avant gave Oklahoma balance on the ground.
Avant rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, helping the Sooners finish with 170 rushing yards. Sategna was also a major factor beyond his receiving production, returning a punt 88 yards for a first-quarter touchdown and finishing with 215 all-purpose yards.
The Sooners were just as effective without the football. UTEP converted only two third downs, averaged 3.3 yards per play and never seriously threatened to score. Oklahoma now gets a much tougher road test after dominating every phase of its opener.

Sooners vs. Wolverines QB Matchup
John Mateer enters the matchup with momentum after efficiently directing Oklahoma’s offense against UTEP. Michigan presents a much tougher defensive test, but Mateer’s experience and ability to attack downfield give the Sooners something they can build around on the road.
Bryce Underwood’s Week 1 was far more uneven.
Michigan turned the football over three times against Western Michigan, and Underwood was responsible for two of them with an interception and a lost fumble. Still, his ability to make plays as both a passer and runner was ultimately the difference when Michigan desperately needed a late score.
Mateer has the cleaner opening performance, while Underwood has the home-field opportunity to answer.
The biggest difference could be how each handles pressure. Oklahoma never trailed against UTEP, while Underwood already had to direct a final drive with Michigan facing a potential upset loss. Saturday should provide a much clearer measurement of both quarterbacks against stronger competition.
Neither offense needs its quarterback to carry everything. Oklahoma showed more balance in Week 1, while Michigan has Buchanan emerging as a dangerous target and will be looking for more from its running backs after an uneven opener.
Oklahoma Sooners vs. Michigan Wolverines bottom line: Oklahoma looked far more complete in its opener, while Michigan survived its mistakes and now gets an immediate chance to respond against a ranked opponent at home.

Here is my Sooners Wolverines free pick: I’m playing Over 43.5 in Ann Arbor. Michigan’s opener was ugly, but this number doesn’t require the Wolverines to become an offensive machine if Oklahoma carries the heavier side of the scoring.
John Mateer threw three touchdowns against UTEP before leaving late in the third quarter. Oklahoma also scored on its first eight possessions, and that kind of efficiency gives the Sooners several paths to push this game into the 40s.
Michigan only needs to do its share.
Oklahoma’s offense is capable of doing enough damage to make 43.5 uncomfortable for an Under ticket.
Bryce Underwood struggled with turnovers in Week 1, but he still accounted for both Michigan touchdowns and showed he can create with his legs. JJ Buchanan also gives him a downfield target after turning six catches into 126 yards.
The other piece I like is game script. If the Sooners get ahead, Michigan will have to let Underwood throw rather than lean on a ground game that produced only 106 yards against Western Michigan.
Last year’s meeting reached only 37 points, but Oklahoma has a more dangerous passing attack now. Michigan should also have more urgency at home after barely escaping its opener.
I see Oklahoma getting into the 30s. Give me Over 43.5.
