Week 9 college football sees the Sooners and Cyclones meeting at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa at high noon on Saturday.
The Sooners are favored by -1.5 points in this Big 12 Conference matchup, and we see a 55.5 showing on the total.
Oklahoma Sooners
The line setters seems to be giving Iowa State some respect, but I am still trying to understand why they see it that way. The Sooners are favoured by a single point at many outlets and the -1.5 can be found everywhere when they travel to Ames this weekend.
Both of these programs have struggled with conference play as they have one win between them since the Big 12 Conference portion of the schedule arrived. Oklahoma got off to a rough 0 – 3 start to Big 12 play before finally picking up a win last weekend against Kansas, 52 – 42. Kansas has completely gone dead after their impressive 5 – 0 start, and the Sooners are hoping the win can inspire a few more so when bowl season gets here they are a part of the festivities.
The Sooners have been an annual participant in the post-season since the turn of the century, but these last 5 games on their schedule are not exactly easy wins. After the Sooners leave Ames, they have Baylor, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech left to play, and a 4 – 3 record means 2 more wins are a must somehow.
I think we all know that the Sooners are a completely different team without Dillon Gabriel. We saw as much in the game he missed against Texas that ended in a loss, 49 – 0. Losing the Red River Rivalry game to that extent sure will leave a bad taste in Norman for a year, but Gabriel was not in that game and he looked great despite throwing his first interception of the season. His 13 – 1 TD to INT ratio is still stellar and I expect him to carry this team to a win on Saturday as road dogs.
Iowa State Cyclones
A bye week to prepare for this game can’t hurt, but will it be enough? Just because a team gets that extra handful of days to take on an opponent, doesn’t mean that they will have all the answers for Oklahoma this weekend. Dillon Gabriel leads the 23rd ranked offense in the country that puts up 471.9 yards per game, but Iowa State does one thing and they do it well. Playing defense must be a thing in Iowa this year, because between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes, my goodness!
Iowa State ranks 10th in the land only allowing 289.7 yards per game, and the 15.1 PPG allowed is good enough to be ranked 7th in defensive scoring. I will assume that those are reasons why this line is as tight as it is being just a bout a pick ’em for this game.
Iowa State has won 7 games against Oklahoma, but the problem is they’ve met 87 times! What they have done is covered 5 of the last 7 meetings with two outright wins over Oklahoma, however, so there are likely some more reasons that the oddsmakers take note of.
The Oklahoma defense has just been junk since conference play got underway, so that also bodes well for Iowa State. The big issue I have is the same issue we all have with Iowa. Defense is great but it really can’t just win football games for you. Defense wins championships is a phrase we all know well, but let’s make no mistake that a defense doesn’t score points outside of the chance of retuning a fumble or a pick into the end zone. Granted, they can change the field position and put their offense is good situations too, but Iowa State’s defense is not going to win this game for them.
I am sure that Coach Campbell is telling his kids that these close losses are just building blocks to bigger wins ahead, but I need to see that happen before I put my money on the Cyclones, even at home.

4* Free Oklahoma Sooners vs. Iowa State Cyclones NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
I have the Sooners taking a 25 – 22 win on the road, and I don’t know if we will hit that total. It was 56 and now it’d down a half point to 55.5. I will not bother with the total but I will suggest a play on the Sooners to win the football game on the road.
