Frisco Football Classic college football sees the Mean Green and Redhawks meeting at Toyota Stadium on Thursday in a game that can be seen on ESPN.
The Redhawks are favored by 3 points over the Mean Green in this Frisco Football Classic matchup. A pair of 6 – 6 programs will clash in Frisco, Texas as the Mean Green are making their 5th post-season appearance in the last 6 years under the tutelage of Seth Littrell.
Littrell has gotten his team to a bowl game in all but one of his seasons with the Mean Green although he has not found a win yet at 0 – 4 hoping to snap that run of poor results. Ending the season on a sour note can hopefully be avoided for the team that should have plenty of support from the locals in Texas.
The Redhawks are 7 – 5 in 12 bowl game appearances although they only have 2 showings over the last 11 years. The 2016 and 2019 campaigns are the only post-season showings since 2010 for this program as Chuck Martin is 0 – 2 in those games. Martin is in year #8 with the Redhawks and he is hopeful to pick up his first bowl win for the fans back in Oxford, OH.
North Texas Mean Green
Even though this will be a bit of a home game for the Mean Green, the line setters have slapped the Redhawks as the slight favorites in the 2021 Frisco Football Classsic.
The Mean Green might be seen running the ball a time or two today… Okay, maybe a little more than that because this team relies on the ground game as much as the Military schools.
North Texas ranks 3rd in the country putting 246 yards per game on the ground and the 440 total yards an outing is good enough to be ranked 21st in the land.
Let’s keep in mind, this team is the only program that found a way to take out UTSA in 2021 ending their perfect season. The Mean Green reeled off 5 straight wins to end the regular season but yet the 6- 6 record barely got them into bowl season, obviously.
When your program is 1 – 6 and needs to win their final 5 games to land in a bowl game… And they pull it off? Well, that is some nice momentum to carry for a team that really disappointed for the entire first half of the season.
Isaiah Johnson looks like he is questionable to go out there for this game, so that leaves the top-3 leading rushers available. Johnson contributed 76 totes for 338 rushing yards and then the numbers for the big 3 really just jump off the page.
DeAndre Torrey ran the ball 248 times and picked up 1,215 yards making 13 trips to the end zone along the way. Ikaika Ragsdale ran the ball 89 times and found 511 rushing yards to go with Ayo Adeyi’s 78 totes which amounted to another 479 rushing yards for this team.
Miami (OH) Redhawks
The Redhawks almost went 7 – 5 in 2021. What an ending to the regular season it was as this team went for 2 on the final play of the season to try to beat Kent State. The 2-point failed conversion attempt left the Redhawks at 6 – 6 and that decision might have been different if they hadn’t already had 6 wins in the books.
Coach Martin has been here a long time but there haven’t been many winning seasons to speak of through his first 8 years. This is only the 3rd bowl game he has gotten his program into but it is still a building block for next year.
AJ Mayer had his chances early in the season to produce wins for this team but he has not seen the field since Brett Gabbert pulled away and took over full-time under center. Gabbert played in 9 games this season and he will be relied on to get the offense moving.
Mayer and Gabbert are both young and they both could be fighting for opportunities for playing time for the next two years.
Gabbert has put up 24 TD passes to only 6 picks and he has 2,418 passing yards while only being sacked 11 times all season. Staying upright is obviously important to any offense and he has done a good job of keeping plays alive although hs not considered a dual-threat guy.
Gabbert and Jack Sorenson have worked well all season together, as Sorenson has taken in 1,290 yards from 69 receptions this year.
In all honesty, this team has so much to work on over the spring and next fall to be ready to compete in the MAAC. Even with all of the experience this team got back from 2020 this really wasn’t a year that produced much success.
The leading rusher on this team is Keyco Mozee and he only found 479 yards while Kevin Davis added 309 to support the ground game.
Sorenson and Mac Hippenhammer are the two guys we can expect to see catching balls from Gabbert, as the hammer did add 48 snags for 786 receiving yards with 5 trips to the end zone.

Favored? Hold on, what? Miami Ohio being favored certainly doesn’t make them the better team. I am a thinkdog kind of guy and I am certainly going there again for this game. Give me that field goal with the Mean Green!
