Spartans vs. Cavaliers Gameday
Friday night brings Norfolk State to Scott Stadium for a Week 2 matchup against No. 25 Virginia. The Spartans are coming off a 31-10 road loss to Old Dominion, while the Cavaliers had an open week after beating NC State 34-8 in their opener. Kickoff in Charlottesville is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on ACCNX.
Norfolk State is 1-1 under second-year head coach Michael Vick. The Spartans opened with a 56-0 win over Winston-Salem State before stepping up in competition against Old Dominion.
Norfolk State already has matched its win total from Vick’s first season as head coach.
Virginia couldn’t have asked for much more from its opener. The Cavaliers piled up 413 total yards, including 258 on the ground, while holding NC State to 168 yards. That performance pushed Virginia into the AP Top 25 at No. 25.
The Cavaliers now get their second straight game at Scott Stadium. Norfolk State is playing its second consecutive road game against an FBS opponent, making this another significant test for Vick’s program.

Norfolk State Spartans vs. Virginia Cavaliers Odds & Last 5
Virginia is expected to win comfortably, with the Cavaliers laying 44.5 points at home. Norfolk State is getting +44.5, while the total has moved into the 54.5 range. The Spartans are also massive moneyline underdogs.
Norfolk State’s two games have produced dramatically different results.
The Spartans crushed Winston-Salem State 56-0 before losing 31-10 at Old Dominion. They stayed within 17-10 into the third quarter of that loss before the Monarchs scored the final 14 points. Norfolk State now faces an even larger jump against a ranked ACC opponent.
Virginia has only one result to evaluate after its early open date. The Cavaliers jumped on NC State for a 17-0 halftime lead and never let the Wolfpack back into the game.
Cavaliers Stats
Virginia controlled both sides of the ball against NC State, finishing with a 413-168 advantage in total offense. The Cavaliers were particularly effective on the ground, rushing for 258 yards and averaging 6.6 yards per carry. They also put together a school-record 23-play touchdown drive that consumed 12:15.
Beau Pribula was dangerous in two different ways.
The Missouri transfer completed 9 of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also led Virginia with 110 rushing yards on 15 attempts, becoming the program’s first quarterback to reach 100 rushing yards in a game since 2022.
Virginia had plenty of help behind him.
Jekail Middlebrook added 64 yards on 15 carries, while Xavier Brown ran for 40 yards and a touchdown. Brown also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass, and Da’Shawn Martin turned his only reception into another 47-yard score.
The defense held NC State to 10 first downs and 3.3 yards per play. Virginia also forced two turnovers and kept the Wolfpack scoreless until late in the third quarter. It was a complete opening performance before the Cavaliers’ week off.

Spartans Stats
Norfolk State has already experienced both ends of the scoreboard this season. The Spartans dominated Winston-Salem State in their opener before running into much tougher resistance at Old Dominion. Through two games, they have leaned heavily on a productive rushing attack.
Jalyn Daniels has been their most consistent weapon.
Daniels has 188 rushing yards on 26 carries, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt. He ran for 104 yards in the opener and followed that with 84 yards on only 11 carries against Old Dominion. Norfolk State is averaging 216 rushing yards per game as a team.
Deljay Bailey has also contributed with his legs.
The quarterback has 68 net rushing yards and two touchdowns through two games. Shamar Vick has added 61 yards on only six attempts, giving the Spartans another option when they want to attack on the ground.
Norfolk State’s defense has allowed only 97 rushing yards per game and 3.0 yards per carry. The competition gets much tougher here, particularly after Virginia’s offensive line controlled NC State in the opener.

Spartans vs. Cavaliers QB Matchup
Beau Pribula gives Virginia a veteran quarterback who can stress a defense without relying entirely on the passing game. His mobility was immediately noticeable in his Cavaliers debut, and his decision-making kept Virginia comfortably ahead of the chains. Norfolk State will have to account for him on designed runs and broken plays.
Pribula also showed he doesn’t need heavy passing volume to move the offense.
Virginia used its ground game to control NC State, allowing Pribula to pick his spots through the air. That balance is particularly useful as a heavy favorite because the Cavaliers don’t need to force throws or chase explosive plays on every possession.
Deljay Bailey has started both games for Norfolk State and brings some mobility of his own.
Bailey has completed 27 of 40 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns with one interception this season. All three touchdown passes came in the opening win over Winston-Salem State, while Old Dominion held him to 94 yards through the air.
The quarterback advantage belongs to Virginia, but Bailey’s job Friday isn’t to match Pribula statistically. Keeping Norfolk State on schedule and extending possessions would give the Spartans their best chance to avoid letting this turn into a track meet.

Here is my Spartans Cavaliers free pick: I’m taking Norfolk State +44.5 Friday night. Virginia owns the obvious talent advantage, but laying more than six touchdowns leaves very little room for the favorite to ease off once this game gets comfortable.
The Spartans are 1-1, and their loss at Old Dominion was more competitive than the 31-10 final suggests. Norfolk State trailed 17-10 midway through the third quarter before the Monarchs finally pulled away.
That’s enough fight for me at this number.
Norfolk State doesn’t have to make this interesting on the scoreboard to cash our ticket.
Virginia should control the line of scrimmage, and Beau Pribula gives the Cavaliers another way to create explosive plays. Still, this isn’t a spot where Virginia needs four quarters of aggression to get what it wants.
Michael Vick’s team can help itself by leaning on Jalyn Daniels and shortening possessions. If Deljay Bailey takes care of the football, a couple of sustained drives could make 44.5 feel enormous late.
Virginia also comes in rested after an open week with bigger ACC goals ahead. I’m not betting on an upset; I’m betting on the game reaching a point where style points stop mattering.
Something like 42-10 works for me. Give me Norfolk State +44.5.
