Week 12 college football sees the Huskies and Bulls meet at UB Stadium.
The Huskies are favored by 1.5 points in this MAC matchup as they look for revenge from last year’s loss to the Bulls, 49 – 30. The Huskies had won 12 straight games against Buffalo before their meeting last season as they opened the 2020 campaign against each other.
The Huskies ended 2020 with an 0 – 6 record in Thomas Hammock’s second season with the program but that has all been put behind them with 7 wins in 2021. Already bowl eligible, the Huskies find themselves favored on the road by the smallest of margins on Wednesday.
Remember all of those outlets that had the Huskies finishing in the MAC West Division basement in 2021? Yeah, how about a likely appearance in the MA title game instead! With the win over Central Michigan who sit one game behind them in the standings, the Huskies will be the team fighting for this year’s Conference Championship!
Buffalo also had a ton of vision changes this past spring with an entirely new coaching staff that was supposed to build on the 6 – 1 2020 season. Not so much, and even a 6 – 6 campaign might not be enough to land the Bulls in a bowl game with that shit win over Wagner on the schedule to start this season.
Again, why the hell any team thinks that scheduling an FCS program is helpful when it does more to hurt your chances of a post-season appearance is beyond me!
N. Illinois Huskies
The Huskies will be the team playing in the MAC title game so you can write that down now. I know, I know, they still need to go out and officially win this game but unless they go 0 – 2 and the Chippewas go 2 – 0 over the last 2 games the Huskies will be representing the West Division in the title game.
What a way to find win #7 on the season last week! After losing an agonizing 52 – 47 game to Kent State on November 3, the Huskies kicked a last-second field goal last Wednesday to earn a 30 – 29 win over Ball State.
If you missed that game? Oh, come on man, what the hell else would you be doing on a Wednesday night, watching Survivor? LoL, I personally love that the MAC games are happening early in the week to give us more football to watch.
Anyway, the last 3 minutes of the game were where all the excitement came from as 3 scores happened to see the lead change each time. NIU took a 27 – 26 lead with 2:42 to play from a Jay Dukcer 10-yard scoot to the end zone. Exactly one minute later, Ball State responded with a field goal to take the lead back and John Richardson told everyone to drive home safely on the last boot of the game.
Ducker was the MVP of the game running for 155 yards from 28 carries with that one trip to paydirt mentioned that came in the 4th quarter.
Trayvon Rudolph and Cole Tucker both toppled the 100-yard receiving mark in the win. Rudolph did fumble once leading to a turnover and QB Rocky Lombardi threw a pick to go with his 1 TD pass on the night.
Buffalo Bulls
The Bulls are almost certainly not going to make a post-season appearance in 2021 after such a promising 2020. Buffalo was a perfect 5 – 0 going into last year’s MAC title game in a crazy schedule-shortened season for everyone in the MAC.
If you recall, and unfortunately we all had to live through it, MAC football almost didn’t happen at all a year ago. As was the case for plenty of conferences, the decision to at least play a handful of division games came to be and that was all that we all got.
Buffalo lost a lot of their big-name players who followed Lance Leipold to Kansas, so it really was a rebuilding session for Mo Linguist this season. Oh, in case you missed it that Kansas team upset Texas in a big way this past weekend.
Anyway, the Bulls were 4 – 4 just a couple of weeks ago and it looked like they might be starting to find a niche. That all just came tumbling down with 2 straight losses to Bowling Green and Miami, OH the last 2 outings.
Last week’s 45 – 18 loss to the Falcons really set this team back to where they are home dogs for this game and likely will be next week against Ball State on the road.
