Week 2 college football sees the Aggies and Lobos meeting at Dreamstyle Stadium.
Wooo, now this is a rivalry game that everyone should be keeping their eyes on this weekend! Yeah, not so much, but the underdog has covered 8 of the last 10 and won outright 5 times in that span. Might we see a big upset here?
New Mexico is favored by nearly 3 TD and after seeing how the Aggies have started the season 0 – 2, the line is understandable. The Aggies lost 30 – 3 to UTEP on opening weekend and last weekend they fell 28 – 10 to San Diego State. In all honesty, the Aztecs had plenty of trouble with the Aggies early as it was 10 – 0 HT with New Mexico State out in front.
San Diego State responded with a trio of 3rd quarter scores and held the Aggies scoreless in the second half.
The Lobos took a 27 – 17 win over Houston Baptist to open the season. Wow, go team! Not very impressive to say the least so let’s see what we might expect to happen in this in-state rivalry game on Saturday.
The Lobos are favored by 19 points in this Independent vs. MWC matchup.
New Mexico State Aggies
The Aggies were 31-point underdogs to San Diego State last weekend and they certainly covered that line easily. After opening the season with a 30 – 3 loss to UTEP the Aggies bounced back and looked great early against the Aztecs. A loss is a loss, no doubt, but that type of result will actually give the Aggies a bit of confidence going forward.
Confidence is not something we have used in the same sentence with the Aggies lately, so let’s see if it carries over into this rivalry game.
Head Coach Doug Martin and his program lost the entire 2020 season and only played 2 Spring games in 2021. The loss to Tarleton State really just left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and the win over Dixie State, 36 – 29, come down to the final play of the game. I said DIXIE STATE AND TARLETON STATE, you still with me? LoL
Through 2 games thus far, the Aggies’ leading rusher is Michigan transfer O’Maury Samuels. The dude has only 63 yards to his credit and not one RB on the entire roster has found the end zone yet. In fact, the only team score the Aggies have all season is one TD reception from Dom Gicinto which came against San Diego State last weekend.
Jonah Johnson is 42 for 80 passing through 2 games and he has already thrown 3 INTs to his 1 TD pass.
Josh Carlson has already punted 15 times, and kick returner Robert Downs III is basically being asked to catch kicks and don’t turn over the ball trying to do too much. Carlson transferred over from that aforementioned Dixie State program.
New Mexico Lobos
The win against Houston Baptist reveals nothing we can make use of going forward for the Lobos. Houston Baptist ran the ball for -9 yards, only had 196 passing yards, and turned the ball over 3 times.
I guess we can credit the Lobo defense under Rocky Long for that but it was Houston Baptist football we are talking about here. A win nonetheless, the Lobos find themselves favored big in the rivalry game against the Aggies in hopes of starting the season 2 – 0.
Lobo QB Terry Wilson had a fine day going 20 for 26 with 174 passing yards and 3 TD passes. Wilson completed balls to 10 different receivers in the win and the defense was in Houston Baptist’s backfield all day. Let’s again point out they played Houston Baptist before we go any further.
Wilson transferred over from Kentucky is working tirelessly with DC Derek Warehime to revamp the offense. So far, so good, but you know the next game against Texas A&M might not work out so well for the Lobos.
Anyway, Wilson has enough experience to at least keep the chains moving and he certainly knows how to use his legs to his advantage. He picked up an additional 49 yards on the ground last weekend with a long of 56 as the 3 sacks took away a bit of those yards. The offensive line needs to step it up if more success is going to come during the season.

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Pick
We’re thinking dog again here at Cappers Picks, because this should be a tightly contested game. These are two teams tryingto find any type of identity and I was actually a little impressed with the San Diego State result for the Aggies despite the loss.
