Week 6 college football sees the Lobos and Aztecs meet at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The New Mexico Lobos arrive at San Diego as heavy underdogs to the Aztecs and the line setters certainly point to a 5 – 0 start to the 2021 season for the home team.
At 2 – 3 with wins over Houston Baptist and New Mexico State, we can assume you understand why the line is so towards the Aztecs winning at home on Saturday night, right? Well, the Lobos have managed to score only 23 points in their last 3 games and snapping a 3-game losing streak is the task at hand for Coach Gonzales and the Lobos.
The Aztecs got off to s slow start against FCS Towson last weekend, but a 24-point 3rd quarter turned a 21 – 14 halftime lead into the blowout it appears to be on paper. A 48 – 21 win has the program 4 – 0 for the first time since 2017 when the Aztecs started that campaign 6 – 0.
The Aztecs are favored by 19.5 points in this MWC matchup.
New Mexico Lobos
Remember when the season started and everyone thought the New Mexico offensive line would be a possible asset in 2021? Yeah, not so much thus far as Terry Wilson has been sacked 12 times and has lost 99-yards of field position as a result.
Getting 4 of your 5 starting linemen back is usually a good thing but not only do the sacks tell a story but the total of 2 rushing TDs this season really spreads concern.
Moving the ball has been difficult the last 3 games for the Lobos and the Aztecs rushing defense is 2nd in the land that only allows 46 ypg.
Aaron Dumas and Bobby Cole will both be handling the load out o the Lobos backfield this weekend as usual. The two have combined to carry the ball 100 times for 413 yards and Cole has credit for one of those two team rushing scores.
Terry Wilson will certainly be seen using his legs to move the chains as he sits third on this team in rushing with 66 yards. Don’t be too misled by that, however, because 56 of those yards came on one run of the 41 totes he has credit for.
The Lobos offense ranks all the way back at 122nd in total yards (300.6), they sit 124th in points allowed with 16.8 an outing, and the Aztec defend only allows 19 ppg.
San Diego State Aztecs
The Aztecs escaped the Utah game and now the potential for a monster campaign is underway in San Diego. Look at the rest of their schedule and point out who you think has a chance to snap this winning streak? Air Force? Fresno State? Maybe Boise State on the final game of the season if they ever get their shit together?
It will be interesting because the Aztecs and 2nd-year man Brady Hoak have looked in great form to begin 2021. After a 4 – 4 bowl-less 2020 in season 1 for Hoak’s program, he has already matched last year’s win total through 4 games, and the potential for more is certainly there.
They can certainly not afford to get lulled into being complacent against a New Mexico team that really has struggled to move the ball lately. Everyone in the film sessions is likely seeing just how bad every little detail is over there, and the term licking your chops should come to mind. Hoak has to keep this team motivated to not ease off the pedal and let a team like this come into San Diego to provide any surprises.
Jordon Brookshire has missed the last two games but he is expected to be a participant this weekend in some capacity. Lucas Johnson was thrust into action and started the Utah game picking up a win as 8-point underdogs in triple-overtime. Johnson has started the last two games and has accumulated 193 passing yards with 26 of 45 with a TD and an INT.
Also of concern, leading rusher Greg Bell left last weekend’s game but it is being said that he is good to go. Bell has gotten the lion’s share of carries this season for OC Jeff Hecklinksi with 73 totes for 409 yards and 4 trips to paydirt. Bell has no interest in the passing attack yet, and that will need to change if he wants to be used in third-down situations up the road. In all honesty, none of the RBs in camp are expected to be an asset in the air attack, which to me is always negative.
