Week 3 college football sees the Wolfpack and Wildcats meet at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
A pair of 2 – 0 programs meet on Saturday in Manhattan as the Wolfpack and Wildcats look to remain undefeated. The Wolfpack has the advantage according to the line setters being favored by a couple of points on the road.
The Wolfpack has secured wins over Cal and Idaho State to start the 2021 season and they will have a bye next weekend before taking on Boise State to kick off MW play on October 2.
The Wildcats followed up their opening weekend win over Stanford to open the year with a close win over the Saluki’s last Saturday. Southern Illinois gave Kansas State all they could handle in a 31 – 23 loss to the Wildcats in Manhattan. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are on deck for the Wildcats as Big 12 conference play gets underway next weekend.
The Wolfpack are favored by -2 points in this MW vs. Big 12 matchup.
Nevada Wolfpack
The Wolfpack are off to a 2 – 0 start this season which was to be expected after a fantastic 2020 campaign under Jay Norvell. Nevada played 8 games last year and went 6 – 2 before taking a 38 – 27 win in their bowl game against Tulane to finish the campaign.
In addition, Nevada had 20 returning starters from last year’s squad and that will certainly bring some expectations. Carson Strong returning from a stellar 2020 helps the cause, as he certainly enjoys tossing the rock around the yard. He may not add much with his legs but he has the arm to make up for it.
Strong has already thrown 82 passes completing 56 of them for 6 scores and only 1 pick against him. There really is no depth at running back so expect most of the carries to come from a pair of juniors, Toa Taua and Devonte Lee. Through two games they have combined for 209 rushing yards on 36 carries and that has been the entire run game thus far.
Strong has completed passes to 11 different receivers and already has 4 players over 100 yards. Tory Horton is leading the way with 149 yards from 6 catches averaging nearly 25 yards a pop. Romeo Doubs, Cole Turner, and Elijah Cooks have each toppled the century mark too so expect more of the ball in the air this weekend.
Kansas State Wildcats
The Wildcats were supposed to cruise past the Southern Illinois Salukis this past weekend but that is simply not how it played out. Kansas State took a 14 point 1st quarter lead and everything looked fine and dandy… Or, the wheels fell off and all of a sudden the Salukis had a 23 – 21 halftime lead and the fans were not happy. A spattering of boos was heard in Manhattan as the Wildcats struggled to pull away from an FCS program after a big win over Stanford to start 2021.
The offense is a bit of a mess if we’re being honest here and you see Kansas State is ranked 109th in passing and 84th in total yards out of the gate.
Skylar Thompson entered his senior season expected to have the team in good shape but he has not played all that well. A leg injury to Thompson last weekend saw Will Howard come on to the field and he is expected to get the start. Neither has a TD pass to their credit as of yet and Howard is only 8 for 17 with 76 passing yards and a pick.
Deuce Vaughn should be able to get some rush yards against the Wolfpack and he will need to have a solid outing to keep his team in this game. Vaughn has already found the end zone 4 times and has accumulated 244 yards on 39 carries averaging just over 6 yards a carry.
