Nebraska Cornhuskers
Scotty doesn’t know that onside kicks up 11 are stupid. Oh, Scotty doesn’t know.
Dammit, Scott. Nebraska had effectively stolen the momentum from Northwestern to start the second half, but the air was let out of the building after the onside kick recovery. If you had the Nebraska number like I did, this was the death knell for our bet. Make no mistake, Scott Frost is officially on notice to lose his job at the next L for the Cornhuskers.
I liked what I saw from first half Casey Thompson. There was a lot of creativity and fearlessness in his throws. Unfortunately, after the onside debacle, the entire offensive playcalling seemed to clam up. Mark Whipple led Pittsburgh to a record year with Kenny Pickett but was criticized by Frost postgame. I won’t overreact to what was effectively a mismanaged game; Nebraska still posted 465 yards of total offense and showed some explosive plays to boot.
There is some ATS history that gives a slight edge to the team that hasn’t played yet versus a team that has already played…
North Dakota Fighting Hawks
North Dakota enters the season after having a pedestrian 2021 with a record of 5-6 and failing to play .500 in conference play. A closer look though, shows us that the Fighting Hawks were only 2-5 in one score games — a noisy stat that we know varies year to year. To add on, North Dakota’s TO margin ranked a lackluster 72nd in FCS. Some positive regression to the mean could shoot the Hawks up the Summit League standings.
QB Tommy Schuster returns as the North Dakota starter, posting 13 TD and 7 interceptions. Where the Fighting Hawks prefer to live however is the run game but will have to replace Otis Weah’s 818 rushing yards. Isaiah Smith will look to take advantage of a Cornhusker’s run defense that was gashed by Evan Hull.
North Dakota will return leading tackler, LB Devon Krzanowski, but lose their sacks leader, Jaxson Turner. The Fighting Hawks will also miss ball-seeking LB Noah Larson’s 59 tackles. These are key losses to a team that allowed 10.2 ppg in their wins; a clear sign they rely on the defense to do the heavy lifting.

4* Free Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. North Dakota Fighting Hawks NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
Nebraska has already hit adversity before Week 1. Scott Frost’s coaching and leadership mettle will be tested as he tries to get the Huskers to rebound. While they won’t win the whole thing, they might still be able to salvage the Big Ten West.
I’m still siding with Casey Thompson and Mark Whipple to take the W from a North Dakota team that averaged only 24.5 ppg in 2021. Unfortunately, I don’t have a number at the time of this writing. It will highly depend on how Vegas views the Huskers after their first game, so for now, look to play the Nebraska team total over. If you want to go even safer and don’t mind paying the chalk, take a look at the Nebraska ML.
