Texas Tech comes off an overtime, dogfight win against Texas Tech, while NC State basically had the week of against Charleston Southern. Both teams are looking to stay undefeated on the season.
NC State Wolfpack
It’s difficult to draw much from State’s cupcake game against Charleston Southern, so we’ll have to use some preseason expectations and a general evaluation of the roster. Of course, we’ve also got the ECU game in which the Wolfpack were fortunate to escape with a win.
The most noteworthy observation from that in-state rivalry in Greenville was the poor playcalling. NC State was on the 3 yard line for about 7 plays in two different drives and failed to score, including a run play out of shotgun on 4th and goal.
Devin Leary still remains an intriguing prospect and can make all the throws but sometimes struggles with forcing the ball.
I remain a big fan of RB Demie Sumo-Karngbaye who ran hard in the ECU game. Thayer Thomas has been the standout receiver but NC State doesn’t sport a star at the position.
The defense is what is most exciting about NC State. LB Drake Thomas returns fully healthy and leads a defense that ranks top-15 in defensive success rate this season. CB Derek Pitts Jr. has produced on the young season as well. They should be able to create negative plays against the Red Raiders who are 80th in Havoc allowed.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Joey McGuire is off to a hot start as a first time head coach and has Texas Tech (2-0) as one of the biggest early season surprises. They were able to gut out an overtime win over in-state Houston, winning 33-30.
QB Donovan Smith leads an offense that passes 60% of the time. There were some good moments and some bad moments for Smith who finished with 350 yards, 2 TD and 3 picks. Losing the turnover battle 3-1 is generally not a way to win a game but they were able to finish off the Cougs.
Texas Tech hasn’t run the ball well to start the year, ranking only 63rd in offensive rushing success rate which is not a good matchup against the Wolfpack’s top-30 defensive rushing success rate. Texas Tech will have to rely on their passing offense here.
Tim DeRuyter runs the defense after leading Oregon to 94th in defensive success rate in 2021. The Red Raiders have limited opposing offenses to 306 total yards per game, good for 46th in the country. There are good pieces in this secondary.
