Week 7 college football sees the Wolfpack and Eagles meet at Alumni Stadium.
The 22nd ranked Wolfpack will be looking for their second conference win of 2021 while hoping to add to their 4 – 1 overall record coming into Chestnut Hill. As 3-point favorites, although both programs had their bye last weekend rested up for this tilt on Saturday, the Pack has already taken on Clemson and Mississippi State to start their season and are battle tested.
The Eagles spent their bye week recovering from their 19 – 13 loss to Clemson last time out on October 2. After a 4 – 0 non-conference start to 2021, the Eagles covered the line against the Tigers but were unable to snatch a victory.
As a result of a huge fumble from QB Dennis Grosel in the final minute of the game, The Eagles are now 0 – 1 to start ACC play and are home dogs this weekend.
The Wolfpack are favored by 3 points in this ACC matchup.
N.C State Wolfpack
The Wolfpack’s only loss in 2021 came to that mentioned Miss State program but it hasn’t stopped them from appearing in the top-25 of the polls. The win over Clemson is what bolstered this team into the rankings but it wasn’t as easy the last time out against a game LA Tech team that almost upset them.
The Bulldogs gave the Wolfpack quite a battle as it was 13 – 10 at halftime and LA Tech almost turned an eventual 14-point deficit into a win late in the 4th quarter.
Austin Kendall really outshined Devin Leary and had it not been for 2 big INTs Kendall might have gotten the Bulldogs a win. Regardless, Leary ended the game 22 for 36 with 251 passing yards including 2 scoring strikes to guys we don’t normally see in the end zone.
C.J Riley picked up his first TD of the season and the top 4 wideouts were basically held in check all day by the Bulldogs.
The Wolfpack rank 43rd putting 262.2 yards a game tossing the rock around and it’s 434.2 total yards a game puts this team in the 48th position.
The defense has been stellar so far for DC Tony Gibson, as this team ranks 11th allowing 15.8 PPG, and sits at 13th giving up 92.2 rush yards a game.
BC Eagles
Do you remember where you were when these two met in 2019? I guarantee Dennis Grosel remembers it because the last time he was here it was to make his first start for BC. Now that his counterpart Phil Jurkovec is done for the season it is his job to get this offense moving and to keep scoring points.
Grosel leads the 27th ranked scoring attack that puts up 35.6 PPG although the passing offense is only ranked 83rd averaging 217.6 yards a game. The last time out against Clemson this team lost by 6, 19 – 13, but it could have certainly ended up a win which would have this program at 5 – 0 coming into this weekend.
Instead, Grosel couldn’t handle a snap and the Clemson defense got all the credit for recovering the fumble to basically end the game with 47 seconds left to play.
The N.C State QB certainly outplayed his counterpart from Clemson as he put up 311 passing yards going 23 for 40, but the last memory Grosel has to deal with all week is fumbling the football and costing his team the game.
Grosel has done a decent job limiting turnovers and is much more likely to use his legs to move the chains than Jurkovec was.
Patty Garwo wants the ball and he has carried that thing 73 times picking up 469 yards with 5 trips to the end zone to his credit. Alec Sinkfield and Travis Levy have done an admiral job relieving Garwo as the two have combined to carry the ball 74 times for 476 yards equalizing the 5 scores.
The Eagles defense is only surrendering 16.8 PPG which puts them at 17th in the nation. That, along with their top-30 total and passing yards allowed ranking is certainly an improvement from a season ago.
