Week 11 college football sees the Terrapins and Spartans meet at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans are favored by 13 points in this Big Ten Conference matchup as Sparty looks to rebound from its first loss of 2021. After the huge win over Michigan the previous weekend, the world expected a let-down from Sparty and they certainly came through with that by losing to Purdue, 40 -29.
The talk of ESPN Gameday was how Sparty always seems to fold like a lawn chair when they are in the position they were in last weekend. Amazingly, the chair folded and now Sparty is the one needing to pick up the pieces from their first loss of the year. Make no mistake, this program has been overachieving all season as it is supposed to be a rebuilding year and not one that started 8 – 0.
The Terps have lost 4 of their last 5 games but yet they can still become bowl eligible with an upset win on the road on Saturday. The line setters expect Sparty to rebound from their loss but they don’t give much credit to the Terps’ chances of finding a win.
Maryland Terrapins
Terps QB Taulia Tagovailoa really hasn’t provided that big game for Maryland that reminds anyone of what his brother did in Alabama. The Indiana win did show some signs of him breaking out and the performance against Penn State last weekend showed even more though.
After seeing what Purdue did to this Sparty pass defense a week ago the film room better be filled with excitement coming into this game. Mick Locksley needs this win to secure his first bowl game bid in his 3 seasons at College Park.
The problem the Terps face is that they really haven’t been competitive in their 4 losses getting their ass handed to them each time. The 66 – 17 loss to Ohio State obviously is as ugly as it looks and losing to Iowa 51 – 14 is ugly too.
Having lost 4 of their last 5 games gives us no reason to see a confident team coming into this game but they are lucky to catch Sparty reeling from the loss to Purdue. Can they take advantage of it?
The line setters say no but we have to see Sparty will respond from such a loss with a young team that looked really bad last week against an unranked Purdue. Granted Jeff Brohm is a good coach who had a plan and he got his kids to believe in it.
We also have yet to see Coach Locksley light a fire under his own kids’ ass in 3 years. This program only won 5 games in his first 2 seasons so they have already gotten there with 3 games left to play in 2021.
Michigan State Spartans
Things are about to get mighty sticky for Sparty and the loss to Purdue is going to sting for one big reason alone. The Big Ten East Division Standings now show Ohio State alone at 6 – 0 with Michigan and Sparty tied at 5 – 1. Sparty will make a trip to the Shoe where they’ll face Ohio State next weekend before finishing with Penn State!
So, everyone called for the Michigan State letdown last weekend, and what a flop it was from a team that looked so impressive against Michigan the week before. It will be hard to know what effect it will have on everyone until we see how they come out to start this game.
Keep in mind, this year was not supposed to be the season it has become with a young team that had a lot of holes to fill from the 2 – 5 2020 program this was. The Sparty team total before the season started was 4.5 in the futures section before this year took off.
Those expectations have been crushed but this team still has to figure out how to respond to the loss and get back on track quickly. Head Coach Mel Tucker needs to get his kids refocused on these final 3 games although we know they will be underdogs next weekend at Ohio State.
Michigan State saw their name in the playoff last weekend but now they have fallen back to 7th after the loss to Purdue last weekend. Sparty never had a lead and Purdue once again provided the underdog storyline with trick plays and creative ways to move the football.
Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell just completed another pass against Sparty!! My goodness, when you toss the rock for 536 yards you had one helluva a day and he did that and then some. O’Connell has only thrown for just over 2,000 yards this year so that accounted for 1/4 of hit total season output.
Sparty had better fix that issue and quickly because the Terps passing offense ranks 14th in the nation putting up 316 YPG.
