Week 10 college football sees the Herd and Owls meet at FAU Stadium.
The Herd is favored by a point in this Conference USA matchup and we have a 57.5 showing on the total. One of these teams will become bowl eligible this weekend with their 6th win of the season as both of them come into this game at 5 – 3.
On top of that, both of these teams are locked in a first-place tie atop the East Division standings at 3 – 1 so the winner of this game will put themselves one step closer to the C-USA title game.
Marshall is also hoping to reach their 5th straight bowl game and their first under head coach Charles Huff who took over the program this season. After falling to 2 – 3 early in the season the Herd is now riding a modest 3-game winning streak coming into this weekend.
The Herd snapped off a 38 – 0 win over FIU following up their bye week while the Owls will be in search of their own 3-game win streak with a win this weekend. FAU was the odds-on favorite to win the division in 2021 but they are indeed listed as the dog in this contest.
Marshall Thundering Herd
The Marshall defense has been a strength of this program all season long and it came in handy last weekend shutting out FIU to get to 5 – 3 this season. The Herd’s passing defense is ranked 9th in the nation and they kept FIU QB Max Bortenschlager frustrated the entire game. Max was only 14 for 28 with 128 passing yards and a pick to show for his efforts.
Marshall QB Grant Wells was damn near perfect completing 20 of his 25 pass attempts for 184 yards but the running game made his life easier too. The Herd busted out 246 rushing yards for a team that is ranked all the way back at 64th in the nation that averages only 168 YPG on the ground.
Rashee Ali had himself a game exposing the FIU run defense for 133 yards from 26 carries while finding the end zone twice. Overall, the Herd ground game accounted for 5 TD and Grant Wells added one of those as well.
Wells is having a decent 2021 campaign overall but he needs to cut down on the interceptions. With 10 TD passes on the season, Wells also has been sacked 10 times and has thrown 10 INTs, but he has added 6 TD with his legs despite not being the most mobile QB in NCAA.
The Herd offense ranks 8th in total yards and 8th in passing yards and their 37 PPG puts them at 21st in the nation in scoring. The Herd defense is a little more susceptible on the ground but their passing defense is stellar. Marshall is ranked 9th against the pass only allowing 171.3 YPG and they do a great job of creating turnovers.
FAU Owls
The Owls came away with a huge win last time out taking out 6 – 1 UTEP, 28 – 25, although they were favored by 11 points which makes it hard to call it a big result. UTEP was the team with only 1 loss on the season but yet the line setters gave them no chance to be competitive with a double-digit line against them.
The Owls were down 10 – 7 going to the half but a TD with only 2 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave Willie Taggart’s team the momentum they needed to come out and finish the job. FAU opened up a 28 – 10 lead with about 11 minutes left to play and seemingly had the win secured.
UTEP, however, did not just lay down and play dead as they mounted a comeback that almost got them the win instead. Nkosi Perry looked rather pedestrian completing only 13 of his 26 passing attempts for 149 yards along with 1 TD pass.
If I am honest, I was more impressed with UTEP’s Gavin Hardison who tossed the rock around the yard for 327 yards with a pair of scoring strikes. The 2 interceptions proved costly and he did put the ball on the ground once as well so there is certainly room for improvement for him.
Regardless, the Owls defense did enough to help clinch the win for the Owls who can now take that momentum all the way to the C-USA title game. This program can now win their last 4 games and nothing can stop them other than themselves now.
This heads-up match with Marshall along with games against ODU, WKU, and Middle Tennessee are all winnable games even though they are listed as home dogs this weekend. A 1-point line really doesn’t concern anyone thinking about the respect factor because it’s basically a pick-em game

4* Free Week 10 NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
Pick ’em? So, we only need to be on the right side of the game to cash our tickets? Some sites still show -1 for Marshall but a win would suit them and favorite bettors either way.
I am on that side of the ledger and going with the Herd because of their defense. Whether it is even or -1 I am fine with either offer.
