Week 4 college football sees the Thundering Herd and Mountaineers meet at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
A pair of 2 – 1 teams play their final non-conference games as The Herd and Mountaineers meet on Thursday night.
Marshall started the season with 2 wins over Navy and N.C Central but went down as 9-point favorites to East Carolina last weekend. Charles Huff took over a program that fell apart towards the end of 2020 after starting 7 – 0 only to lose their final 3 games. Many were calling for this to be a bit of a rebuilding season and seeing how this team fell to ECU supports that statement. What was a 38 – 21 lead going to the 4th quarter, the Herd turned into a 42 – 38 loss.
The Mountaineers took down that same ECU team 33 – 19 on opening weekend, but a loss to the Miami Hurricanes accounts for their only loss in 2021. As 9-point dogs, the Mountaineers almost found a win but left South Beach with a 25 – 23 loss. App State is 0 – 3 vs Marshal dating back to 1996, but they do hold a 14 – 9 edge in the all-time series.
These two were familiar with each other dating back to 1978 when they were conference foes at what was Div-AA before it became FCS.
The Mountaineers are favored by 7 points in this Conference USA vs. Sun Belt Conference matchup.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Well, what else is there to say about last weekend? When you are up 38 – 21 going to the 4th quarter and you lose the game, can you say complacency? And it wasn’t like they didn’t have their chance to make their own comeback and win it, but Grant Wells threw a pick on the goal line to end the hopes for the Herd.
Wells started all 10 games last season and is still considered a Freshman with the 2020 allowance due to covid. So, now he has 13 starts under his belt but made the big mistake to cost his team a win last weekend, his second of the game.
Wells ended the game 24 of 39 with 1 TD and 2 picks tossing for 433 yards, and the 1,110 yards for the season look great but the 5 INTs are ugly. Let’s make no mistake here, his QBR on the year is 57.0, and in the Navy game, albeit a huge 49 – 7 win, his stats were stinky poo-poo! (20 of 30 with 2 picks)
Rasheel Ali broke out for 189 yards on the ground last weekend and made 3 trips to paydirt in the loss to ECU. Ali has been seen in the end zone 7 times through 3 games and will top the 300-yard mark with only 7 yards on Thursday night.
Corey Gammage did a bunch of damage grabbing 180 yards on 8 receptions last weekend. Despite being Wells’ main target with 22 grabs for 353 yards, the two have yet to connect for 6 points.
Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Mountaineers are 2 points from 3 – 0 with that lone loss to the Miami Hurricanes, as they almost pulled another significant upset in their history. Who could forget the Michigan game? That is basically when App State announced they were to be taken seriously and it’s been years of winning ever since.
The Mountaineers are constantly the measuring stick in the Sun Belt Conference, and they are/were once again expecting to be atop the heap again in 2021. Anyone following this stuff knows the expectations on the Mountaineers so now it is only left to take it to the field and live up to those expectations.
So far, so good, but these guys will not soon forget that they got SHUT DOWN last year by Marshall and lost 17 – 7 in their house.
Chase Brice was nowhere near this game, obviously being that he was at Duke a year ago, so now he has his chance to prove why it was worth signing him in Boone, NC. Brice has certainly made a good impression so far, going 60 for 86 with 751 passing yards having 4 / 2 TD to INT ratio.
Going against Miami must have brought back some shit memories as he got thumped 48 – 0 against the Canes a year ago. He got sacked 4 times and only put up 94 passing yards… That about covers that outing.
So, he did, at least, keep Appalachian State in a tighter game with his Sun Belt team behind him and not Duke LoL That deserves the LoL, sorry.
Anyway, Brice is certainly not a dual-threat guy, but he definitely can complete passes albeit for not enough yardage in his career. His competition % is stellar and that hasn’t been the issue it is hitting deep balls and gaining more yards where the issue is. He has connected with 13 different pass-catchers while Corey X Sutton seems to be his go-to guy. Sutton has 18 grabs and 240 yards, although they have only connected for a score once.
We can talk passing game all we want but let’s not act like we don’t know the plan for Thursday night for France Ponce and company. Hi, my name is Camerun Peoples! Hi, my name is Nate Noel!
90 Rushes … 525 yards … 5 TD combined. (Peoples has all 5, however)
WE RUN AND WE RUN MORE! Oh, and then they like to run a little, so Brice’s job is to let them do the work and if the run game stuffed we gots to be tossin’ the rock around the yard a little. The Marshal defense obviously game App State fits last year, and they obviously know what Shawn Clark has in mind.
They’re going to run the damn ball!
