Week 4 college football sees the Cajuns and Eagles meet at Paulson Stadium.
The line setters are calling for it to be hot and spicy as the Cajun’s are listed as 2 TD favorites to open Sun Belt Conference play this weekend. Taking it to the road on back-to-back weekends to begin the SBC schedule, The Cajun’s only loss was a respectable showing against Texas in Austin to open the 2021 campaign but the Cajuns have taken 2 straight wins and have big expectations to appear in the Sun Belt title game. A 4th straight bowl appearance is also on the horizon for Louisiana so they cannot afford to let this be a letdown spot.
The Eagles’ only win came against Gardner-Webb by 5 points on opening weekend, but they have been outscored 83 – 16 againsT FAU and Arkansas since then to land at 1 – 2 entering this weekend’s home game in Statesboro. Georgia State has only 1 win in 4 outings against Louisiana, and they just allowed Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson to have a career passing day against them last weekend.
The Ragin’ Cajuns are favored by -14 points in this Sun Belt Conference matchup.
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns
Levi Lewis is having a decent senior campaign for Louisiana and his numbers are respectable enough to expect his consistency to continue. Lewis is completing 66.7% of his tosses (68 of 102) and he will go over 800 yards passing with his first completion this weekend. Is the fact he is not a dual-threat guy going to be a hindrance at some point? He can hold his own escaping pockets and keeping some drives alive with his legs, but his game is relying on his arm.
The Texas defense brought him to the ground 4 times and he has been sacked 6 times overall but he was more efficient last time out against Ohio. Lewis threw another INT and has at least one in all 3 games, but the 21 of 29 for 212 yards supported the run game to land a 49 – 14 win over the Bobcats.
Talk about spreading it out, 17 different pass catchers have seen the ball for Louisiana and he probably just completed two more in the dorms before he went to bed last night. The dude hits anything that is open and the playbook is open enough to have that much depth. We see some teams with 4 or 5 receivers trying to carry the load so that 17 looks amazing, right? In addition, 6 different receivers have caught at least 6 balls with Jalen Willims leading the way with 8 grabs but he has not found pay dirt yet. John Stephens Jr. has 3 scores and he is one of 11 players averaging at least 9.8 ypc.
The Cajuns rank 36th in both total yards and passing yards per game and their 31.3 pPG is good enough to appear 59th in FBS. The running game is in decent shape too with Smith, Bailey, and Johnson all contributing solid numbers and all averaging over 4.4 ypc.
GA State Eagles
The Eagles haven’t exactly soared out of the gate after that big win over Gardner-Webb to open 2021, 30 – 25. FAU handed them a beat down and Arkansas had a QB put up a career day the last time they took the field.
So, to begin Sun Belt play the Eagles have to land Louisiana and they know this might be a long day. The Cajuns being favored by 14 points makes it clear enough, but Georgia State needs to fix a bunch of issues on defense. When you know there are 130 FBS programs and you see 129 and 128 rankings on your total yards and total pass yards allowed? That is your first red flag but then throw in that the Eagles’ passing offense is putting up only 111.3 ypg and ranks 125.
So, the positives? Uh, did I mention they beat Gardner-Webb, 30 25? Okay, good.
Now, let’s try to analyze this offense… but can we really? Who is the QB and is he a runner or a passer? When one of your RBs is 3rd on a 4-man QB depth chart, can you blame me for wondering what the F**k is happening in Statesboro in 2021?
As long as you can run, you can play any position on the field apparently, so now one knows who will be getting the ball or when that will happen either. Does that open the playbook? Yes, no doubt, but do they have the talent to make it work? Not yet! This is a disaster in the making thus far and this team will be in big trouble come Saturday night.
