Week 2 college football sees the Flames and Trojans meeting at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Liberty Flames and Troy Trojans both took victories to open their 2021 campaign, albeit against tremendously weak opponents from FBS level.
The Flames took a 48 – 7 win over Campbell U. last weekend and the Trojans wiped out Southern, 55 – 3. Let’s be honest here and say that there is nothing worth talking about from those games and even seeing those teams on anyone’s schedule is a joke.
Anyway, this game is expected to be a much tighter battle as the line setters have issued a -4 on the road team. The Flames earned a 22 – 16 win in the only meeting between these two teams that came back in 2018.
The Malik Willis era at Liberty has the junior QB starting his second consecutive season with the Flames. Willis didn’t need to do much in the opener against Campbell as he ended the game 15 for 23 with 217 passing yards and a TD. Willis added 55 more yards on the ground on 5 rushes and found the end zone once with his legs.
The Flames are favored by -4 points in this Independent vs. Sun Belt matchup.
Liberty Flames
Malik Willis has begun his second season at Liberty as the starting QB and so far, so good. Granted, an easy win over Campbell to start the 2021 campaign won’t impress anyone too much. Willis took over last season and guided his team to another bowl appearance, being their second in the last two seasons.
There is so much upperclassmen leadership at Liberty this season that the expectations for an Independent team are sky-high after a 10 – 1 record a year ago. Replacing Calvert was no easy task at QB, but Willis has made the transition look rather easy for Liberty. He may not have the gunslinging approach of Calvert, but he makes up for it with his ability to get outside with his feet and extend drives.
The offensive line is so full of experience that they even go 2-deep at guard and had 12 starters actually returning from last season. Yes, I said 12, if not really 14 if you go over each player’s history with the team that had 23 players from the offense return.
Joshua Mack ran for 60 yards to open the campaign and many see him as a possible 1,000-yard guy in 2021. Mack and Willis will both be on top of the board in rushing yards this season as long as they both stay healthy. Mack started 7 games last season and pulled in just under 800 yards on the ground despite picking up Covid-19. Shedro Louis is also going to be getting his opportunities to carry the rock for Hugh Freeze, as the trio all found the end zone in the opening day win over Campbell.
The Flames do need to find a way to get more pressure on opposing QBs this season. They recorded 0 sacks against Campbell and the schedule only gets tougher from here on out. Well, okay, after the Old Dominion game next week, at least LoL
Troy Trojans
Troy had made three straight bowl appearances when Chip Lindsey took over two years ago and now he has two losing seasons under his belt. The Trojans have won 5 games in back-to-back campaigns and even with the cupcake win over Southern, it might be a tall order to win 6 games in 2021.
Four of Troy’s 6 losses last season came by 7 points or less and they were in every game except for BYU and App State which were blowouts.
The Trojans didn’t really show any depth last weekend only using 3 running backs although all 3 of them found the end zone in the 55 – 3 win over Southern. Kimani Vidal led the way with 81 yards and a score and Jamontez Woods scored twice on only 13 carries for 28 yards.
Starting QB Taylor Powell ended the game with 234 passing yards going 17 for 28 with 2 TD and a pick. Gunnar Watson also got some time under center and completed all 5 of his pass attempts for 69 total yards.
Tez Johnson saw time in all 11 games last year as a freshman and he led all receivers in the opener with 92 yards on 5 catches with a score. In all, 10 different receivers got to see the ball in the opening game and that is just a good way to build some momentum towards this tilt with Liberty coming to town as 4-point favs.
