Week 6 college football sees the Dukes and Red Wolves meeting at Centennial Bank Stadium on Saturday in Jonesboro, Arkansas. This will be the first meeting between the two programs and James Madison’s first trip to Arkansas to play an FBS program. This will also be the longest road trip for the Dukes this year.
The Dukes are favored by -11.5 points in this Sun Belt Conference matchup while the total has fallen to 55.5 from the opening 58.
James Madison Dukes
When the Dukes first let it be known that they were going to be joining the Sun Belt Conference, many outlets put this James Madison program at the back of the pack this year, their first at the FBS level.
Well, so much for a rough start that was expected, because the view from 4 – 0 looks pretty damn good to me! Also t 2 – 0 in conference play with a win over Appalachian State already in the books, Curt Signetti has his program two wins away from a potential bowl invitation. The win over Norfolk State early in the non-conference schedule didn’t do much but give the Dukes an easy win favored by 41 points.
However, that 32 – 28 win in Boone against Appalachian State sure did bring a boost of confidence moving forward. James Madison was once again a huge favorite last weekend against a weak Texas State program that will be struggling to find wins all year.
Ranked 8th in the country, JMU is averaging just under 45 PPG, and a balanced attack has been aided by the ground game that puts up 218.3 a game good for 18th in the land. Todd Centeio is doing a great job controlling the offense and not turning the ball over. With 11 TD to the 1 pick against him, that ratio is outstanding and oh, by the way, he leads the team in rushing too. You know, all those quarterbacks out there that lead the team in both categories? Hmm hmm, there aren’t many of them, and the Colorado State transfer is excelling in OC Mike Shanahan’s offense.
Arkansas State Red Wolves
How the tides have turned in the Sun Belt, right? I remember the days when Arkansas State was almost righted to make a bowl game and be competitive, but that’s all changed lately. I am sorry, but Butch Jones couldn’t coach a taco stand to sell burrito’s on time, and usually the Sun Belt Conference is where coaches start and move on to bigger things.
Butch Jones has gone the other way, coming from an SEC program in his last gig with Tennessee, only to hope a Sun Belt program could be his to run instead. Well, how does 2 – 10 look to begin his tenure? Last year was disgusting, and now the Red Wolves are already under .500 and favored to get trounced at home by a team that has played a total of 4 games in the Sun Belt.
History can’t save your ass here, so we have to assume that the Red Wolves locker room knows that they are big underdogs this weekend by double-digits to lose in front of their own fans. This team is 2 – 0 at home and 0 – 3 on the road, and the line setters are a perfect 5 – 0 setting the number.
Let’s face facts that wins over Grambling and LA-Monroe aren’t exactly seen as convincing, so there is still room to question the Red Wolves ability to get the job done. We will be learning a lot about this program today, because a loss here at home and a win for JMU would send these two programs into much different directions.
The Red Wolves better bring the biggest effort they have because they will be going up against the #1 defense in all of college football when it comes to rushing and total yards. Former Florida State QB and transfer portal catch James Blackman is in now way a dual-threat guy, but he has a nice 7 to 1 TD to INT ratio thus far.
