Week 7 college football sees the Cyclones and Wildcats meet at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
It’s Farmageddon, baby! For the 105th time, this long and storied rivalry will be renewed when Iowa State and Kansas State take the field in Manhattan, Kansas!
What started as just another game in 1917 has now turned into one of the longest-running series in the history of college football. ISU holds the series edge, 51 – 49 – 4, and they’ll be following up last year’s 45 – 0 drubbing they handed to the Cats in Ames.
Luckily for Kansas State, Skylar Thompson looked pretty well last weekend after he sat out of both the Nevada and Oklahoma State games. Both programs have two weeks to prepare for this tilt following their bye-weeks.
Speaking of drubbing, the Cyclones wiped out the Kansas Jayhawks last time out, 59 . 7, and QB Brock Purdy threw 4 TD passes before the end of the first quarter!
The Cyclones are favored by 6.5 points in this Big 12 Conference matchup.
Iowa State Cyclones
There are starts to a football game and then there is whatever the hell Iowa State did to Kansas two weeks ago. Brock Purdy threw those 4 1st-quarter TD passes and it was 38 – 0 Cyclones as the first-half clock expired.
Purdy took home 1st-team Big12 honors in 2020 and his name was expected to roll off the tongue pertaining to many and all QB awards in the nation for 2021. Purdy is not going to win any Heisman trophies or set any passing records but he will keep his team in every game this team plays.
Purdy leads the 37th ranked scoring offense putting up 33.8 points a game and his offense is averaging 442 YPG which is good for 39th in the land. This is Purdy’s 4th year controlling this offense under Matt Campbell, and the head coach renewed his contract through 2028 this year.
Campbell is a 3-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and he is looking to make back-to-back appearances in the conference title game. The Cyclones have also appeared in 4 straight bowl games.
This defense has been stellar in 2021 and you see those rankings telling quite a story. The Cyclones rank 2nd in the nation against the pass only allowing 144.2 YPG and here is the 3rd ranked total yards defense that only surrenders 233.8 yards as a whole per contest. In all, Iowa State is sitting in the top-10 of every defensive statistic that matters.
It will be homecoming next weekend in Ames when the ‘Clones host Oklahoma State and it is a rough schedule ahead from here. The Cyclones have 3 big road tests in front of them with trips to Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Texas Tech
Kansas State Wildcats
The Wildcats are certainly glad to see Skylar Thompson back at practice and feeling good, and he almost got them to a win over Oklahoma last time out in his return to the field. Thompson missed two games but he and Spencer Rattler gave us quite a show, but OU escaped with a 37 – 31 win as the comeback effort fell short for the Wildcats.
Thompson ended the game going 29 for 41 with 320 yards and 3 TD strikes but Rattler reeled off an impressive 22 for 25 although he did throw a pick.
We all know Skylar Thompson is not a dual-threat dude so he needs his running game to be effective so he can stand in the pocket. Deuce Vaughn will have to produce a big game so the offense can stay balanced and he averages nearly 5 yards a pop with 5 scores to his credit. Vaughn leads the team in receptions as well, making him the actual dual-threat in this offense.
Phil Brooks leads the team in receiving yards with 225 from 17 grabs, but Vaughn is right there with him having 20 catches for 206 yards and a pair of scores through the air, one more than Brooks who only has a single score this season.
Hey now, we don’t get to point out the kickers too often but Taiten Winkel has been stellar with the boots. Winkel is 9 for 9 with extra point conversions and he has only missed 1 of his 9 FG attempts in 2021.
The Wildcats offense looks like a disaster on paper but the defensive numbers look decent enough. Kansas State is ranked 7th in the nation against the run surrendering only 86.4 YPG, but the passing numbers need improvement. You can see this team sitting at 103rd allowing 256.2 yards a contest.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
I actually like this total to go over the number although not many trends are out there to support the play. I found a trend or two but 50.5 is just too low for me in this spot. I can foresee a 31 – 24 type of game playing out and I do see the Cyclones as the better team. Iowa State covers and the total comes in with it.
4* Free Week 7 NCAA Betting Pick:
Thompson and Purdy should be able to navigate their way to 51+ points, so that is where I have to lean on suggesting here.
