Week 4 college football sees the Hawkeyes and Scarlet Knights meeting at SHI Stadium on Saturday night.
The Hawkeyes are favored by -7.5 points in this Big Ten Conference matchup, and we have a low 35.5 number showing on the total. That line fell to 34.5 over the last couple of days and it might fall further as game time draws near.
Iowa Hawkeyes
I know, right? The Hawkeyes are supposed to win this game by 8 points when they can barely score 8 points? What is this season going to actually produce in Ames this year, because I think we are all still wondering how this team is winning games.
Well, the defense is certainly doing their part and they’ll get to go up against Evan Simon for Rutgers who will likely be under center for the Scarlet Knights again.
Iowa got past Nevada last weekend, 27 – 0, and we have to assume that even though coaches say they don’t look ahead that everyone sees Michigan on the calendar next weekend back in Ames. Now, I am not saying that Kirk Ferentz will let his group look past Rutgers because he knows his own offense can be lethargic and it can be tough constantly counting on your defense to win games.
Not in Iowa, however, because Ferentz will gladly take a 7 – 6 win if that’s what was in the cards today. Iowa is ranked #2 in the country allowing a ridiculous 4.3 points a game, and of course that will change as Big Ten Conference play gets underway. I don’t think any of us really expect a lot of low-scoring affairs with the schedule Iowa has this year. Outside of the Wisconsin affair, Iowa will be playing some decent offenses that will get to them better than these early opponents have done.
South Dakota State, Iowa State, and Nevada aren’t exactly going to be among the upper tier offenses in college football so let’s take it for what it’s worth to this point.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Gavin Wimsatt is questionable to play this weekend, and Noah Vedral still hasn’t seen the football field in 2022. Greg Schiano mentioned them both in his weekly presser the other day saying that they are both still unsure about taking the field on Saturday.
Well, the Iowa defense will be waiting for Evan Simon to likely emerge as the starter, as he has seen time in all 3 games this year. With all the question marks in the quarterback department, Simon will likely get his chance to keep leading this team if he can come out and put up some numbers on Saturday.
The Iowa defense will be game planning to shut him down so he better come up with his own plan to move the offense outside of just running the plays being called from the sidelines. The problem is that he has no addition to the game with his legs which makes him a pocket passer relying on an offensive line. Luckily, Rutgers has 73 returning starts on the offensive line, and now they have 3 more games under their belts this season.
In case you didn’t notice, the Rutgers defense hasn’t exactly been lit up either, as they are ranked 2nd in the nation holding opponents to 34.3 rushing yards a game.
