Week 7 college football sees the Bulldogs and Cowboys meet on Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.
It may not be a divisional game but it is a conference game nonetheless when the Bulldogs and Cowboys come together on Saturday. Both teams have secured 4 wins although Wyoming has done with only 5 games in the books compared to the 6 played by Fresno State.
These two programs have met 5 times in Mountain West play since 2012 and the Bulldogs have certainly come out the better team more often than not. Fresno State is 4 – 1 both SU and ATS against Wyoming in those games and is 4 – 2 overall in 6 all-time meetings since their first clash in 2009 when Fresno was still playing in the WAC.
However, a lot has changed since their last meeting in 2018 starting with the fact that the Fresno State head coach is now Kalen DeBoer. DeBoer took over the Bulldogs program last season and a covid-19 shortened year saw them only take the field 6 times.
The Bulldogs have had a nice vacation since the month of October started. A trip to Hawaii on October 2, albeit a 27 – 24 loss that snapped their 4-game win streak, is the only football they have played.
Wyoming suffered its first defeat of 2021 last weekend after a 27 – 24 loss to Air Force but will be home for 3 of their next 4 games including this weekend’s affair. Isn’t it amazing the success this team has had and yet their offense is ranked outside the top-100 in total yards? The passing game is even worse shape so this could be why we see a home dog situation in Laramie on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs are favored by 3.5 points in this Mountain West Conference matchup.
Fresno State Bulldogs
The Bulldogs should be favored in this game and it is because of their sound defense and their passing offense.
This team tanks 3rd in the land putting up nearly 400 passing yards a game and Jake Haener is enjoying this season under center. He has already aired out 2,230 yards and is only 1 of 3 players to have toppled the 2K mark in 2021.
In accordance, 7 wide receivers have no less than 132 yards and Jalen Cropper is getting the lion’s share of the ball. With 9 TD grabs and 528 yards to his credit, the 1,000-yard mark could be his within a few more games.
However, and you know I love to point these out all the time. There are 130 FBS programs and when any team I cover has a stat showing 130 I am quick to point it out.
Here sits the team that commits the most turnovers in all of college football ranked 130th in the nation. Oh, and on the other side of the ball? Hmm hmm, here sits the 130th ranked team in the nation that has only caused 1 turnover through 6 games.
So, take that into account because we all know turnovers can win or lose games.
Wyoming Cowboys
When you look at the final scores of the first 4 Wyoming wins, it is hard to understand how the offense is ranked so low in total yards and passing yards. The Cowboys are putting up 30.4 PPG but the defense has given them a short field with some big turnovers, 6 of them in fact which has them ranked 47th in takeaways.
Even the Northern Illinois win didn’t produce big stats for anyone on the Wyoming roster and that game ended 50 – 43 in regulation time. Chambers only had 200 passing yards, Valladay barely broke the century mark, and Neyor led the receiving corps with only 4 grabs for 87 yards.
So, while the scoring numbers look good putting up 30+ PPG, there is still room for concern with this offense. Sean Chambers really struggled last weekend against Air Force, and those numbers are simply bad! He ended the day going 11 for 28 with only 143 passing yards and once again Neyor led the team in receiving yards.
Unfortunately, the 55 yards he brought in came from only 3 grabs but he did score the only TD besides the run from Chambers that produced points in a 24 – 14 loss.
Chambers fumbled twice and really isn’t a dual-threat kind of guy. He relies on Valladay to the running so he can use his arm to win games but can he? I question this Wyoming offense and I do believe it will struggle again this weekend.

I couldn’t find many trends to support the play I am making here so it is what it is. I expect plenty of points to be found here despite all the under-trends between these two teams.
4* Free Week 7 NCAA Betting Pick:
I saw this total open at 56 and slowly it has fallen to 54 as the week has gone on. I digress and expect a 34 – 30 type of game that will get us over the number.
