Week 9 college football sees the Chanticleers and Thundering Herd meeting at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, WV, on Saturday.
The Herd are favored by -2 points in this Sun Belt Conference matchup but the Chanticleers have other ideas chasing win #7 on the year.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
With bowl eligibility already clinched, the Chants find themselves as underdogs on the road this weekend against Marshall after losing their first game of the campaign. Old Dominion handed Coastal Carolina a 49 – 21 beat down last weekend, and the line setters reacted making Marshall the slight favorites to win this game as a result.
Old Dominion may be new to the Sun Belt Conference, but they certainly weren’t afraid of Coastal Carolina as 11-point dogs. Coastal has been favored by double-digits a bunch this year, and they really have struggled covering any of this big lines. The Chanticleers have only covered 2 games all season, as they were favored by 10+ in 5 of their last 6 games and only covered one of them.
Grayson McCall was a 2020 1st-team All Sun Belt Conference QB, and he achieved the same status last year with his ridiculous 27 – 3 TD to INT ratio. He is on pace to put up similar numbers with a 18 – 1 ratio this year, and he is completing over 70% of his passes.
The problem is, Marshall can play defense and they do it well. While Coastal ranks 28th in the land averaging 458.4 yards per game, the Herd defense ranks 7th in the land only allowing 284.4 yards an outing. Something will have to give, and the way Coastal looked last weekend I get why the line setters are down on them in this spot.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall upset Notre Dame, and I think we all thought that from there they would just cruise through the Sun Belt Conference in their first year since moving from Conference USA. I love how we look at the current standings in the Sun Belt Conference, because Marshall sits on the bottom of the East Division and yet they’re favored to beat a first-place 6 – 1 Chanticleer squad.
Because Marshall has been playing such stellar defensive football, they have hit the under 6 of 7 games, and we have a total in the mid-50s for this contest.
It’s homecoming weekend, and it is weird that they are playing a team they have never met before. Coastal had a bye last week, so Marshall is well aware that the Chanticleers will be well-rested and ready to go this weekend, especially after picking up their first loss last time out.
Henry Colombi is not exactly the QB that McCall is, and that is because he simply turns the ball over too often and it is my biggest concern. Colombi has already thrown 4 interceptions to 6 TD passes, and that ratio is obviously in need of fixing. Luckily, he has a running game in the form of Khalan Laborn who is already over 1,000 yards for the entire campaign. Through only 7 games, Laborn has accumulated 1,002 yards and he has been seen in the end zone a dozen times.
Cam Fancher might get some playing time under center again, but he too is a turnover waiting to happen. I am not buying what Marshall is selling, so let’s just get to the point…

4* Free Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. Marshall Thundering Herd NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
No way, man. Coastal picking up that first loss should piss them off and get them inspired to come out and get back on track with a win over Marshall. I see this as a 27 – 21 road win and the under should come in with it. If the line setters want to give me almost a field goal? Sold!
