Week 3 college football sees the Bearcats and RedHawks meet at Paycor Stadium on Saturday at high noon ET.
The Bearcats are favored by -22.5 points in this historic matchup that dates all the way back to 1988. These two old-school rival programs play the for the Victory Bell, which is the longest running trophy awarded among two non-conference teams in the history of college football. They did play within the same conference for a spell in the 1940s & 50s but they still always make sure they meet every season regardless of affiliations.
Cincinnati Bearcats
The Bearcats have taken wins from the last 15 meetings in this historic rivalry, and the line setters are pointing to another easy win for them this weekend. This game is being played on the Cincinnati Bengals home field for the third time in eight years.
Eastern Michigan transfer Ben Bryant has enjoyed his stay in Cincinnati thus far, and it must be nice to come into a program that has winning aspirations in 2022. Bryant has thrown 5 touchdown passes through the first two games of the season, and the lone interception against Arkansas in the season-opening game is his only blemish thus far. Of course, losing that game to the Hogs is a bigger blemish than the interception but he recovered nicely last weekend against Kennesaw.
Calling him an EMU transfer is still funny considering he spent his first 2 seasons right here in Cincinnati, so he is essentially just back again.
By the same token, Kennesaw wasn’t going to provide much of a challenge as nearly 30-point underdogs, and we have a similar situation here with Miami. Being strongly favored in this rivalry game is no surprise, but it certainly doesn’t mean that this game will be a walkover affair.
Luke Fickell doesn’t have the same 13 – 1 program that he did a year ago, and he is still learning about this squad as we are every weekend. The defensive side of the ball has been a strength of this team for years but they only returned a handful of starters and still have a lot of work to do to get back to that level.
Miami RedHawks
Coach Martin has been the head coach at Miami for 9 seasons now, so he is no stranger to the significance of this rivalry. Unfortunately, Martin is a perfect 0-fer when it comes to beating the Bearcats so might he have the team that can pull it off in 2022?
No one cares what the line setters are pointing toward, because covering is not the plan this team wants to win the football game and get the Victory Bell back on their campus again. Even though this rivalry is tied at 59 wins apiece, losing to the same teams 15 times sucks and these guys have got to be sick of it by now.
After the loss to Kentucky to open the season, the RedHawks were favored by 31 points over Robert Morris and they only scored 31 points while giving up 14. So, that tells you they are 0 – 2 ATS this season out of the gate but are 1 – 1 overall with a difficult schedule ahead of them.
Miami has Northwestern and Buffalo on deck before their homecoming game against Kent State on October 8, and QB Brett Gabbert is likely out for the next few games. An upper body injury to Gabbert now gives Aveon Smith a chance to prove himself and he did okay last weekend to get his career really moving. Smith has been with the program for three seasons now and he wasn’t even expected to be on the field again in 2022.
Having a start under his belt is nice but Cincinnati is not Robert Morris and this could end up being either a proving ground or a beat down for this team.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Over is 3-1-1 in Bearcats last 5 games in September.
- Underdog is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 meetings.
- RedHawks are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
4* Free Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Miami RedHawks NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
I have the over 50.5, as the line has come down because people are expecting Cincinnati to get their defense back. They are not coming back and I think this game will be tighter than the line setters think. I see a 35 – 20 game taking place so play it accordingly.
