Week 12 college football sees the Chippewas and Cardinals meet at Scheumann Stadium
The Cardinals are favored by 2 points in this MAC matchup and we see a 62 showing on the total.
The Chippewas are already bowl eligible at 6 – 4 with two conference games yet to play and if you haven’t seen Lew Nichols III play football yet you should tune in for this game on Wednesday night.
Nichols became the 4th player in all of college football to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in the win over Western Michigan a week ago. He carried that momentum into last week’s game against Kent State gaining 215 more yards while making 4 trips to the end zone in the 59 – 30 win over the Flashes.
Central Michigan has now won 4 of their last 5 games to land at 6 – 4 and a strong finish could propel them to the MAC title game. Although they did lose to Northern Illinois and are a game behind them in the division standings there is still hope that this program could represent the division but they will need some help and 2 straight wins to close out the 2021 regular season.
Central Michigan Chippewas
Any loss will end the chances of the Chipps representing the division in the title game because of their loss to NIU a few weeks ago. NIU is 5 – 1 and the Chippewas are 4 – 2 as a result and now they would have to win the division outright to land in the title game.
Those odds are against them but they are still not even favored in this game against Ball State.
Lew Nichols III might have stolen the headlines but let’s not lose track of the fact that Richardson threw for 4 TD in the win as well. Daniel Richardson ended the game an efficient 21 of 27 for 268 yards making use of 8 different wideouts to secure the win last week.
Dallas Dixon and Joel Wilson each accounted for a pair of scores although the two of them only combined to catch 6 balls for 98 total yards.
The defense caused and found 3 fumbles although the game didn’t exactly get off to a great start. Kent State was up 14 – 0 with just under 4 minutes to play in the first quarter and the Chipps went off from there scoring 26 points to take a 9 point lead to the locker room.
Central Michigan has not exactly been sound defensively this year and they still rank 120th against the pass. The offense is in much better shape on paper showing CMU ranked 21st in passing yards and 24th in total yards.
Ball State Cardinals
It was supposed to be a big season for the Cardinals in 2021. Remember when we were all looking into the teams before the season and we saw Ball State go 7 – 1 in 2020 building up towards a big 2021?
Yeah, that hasn’t happened and there are only two games remaining on the Cards schedule to find that all-important 6th win of the season. The line setters like their chances slapping the chalk on the Cards but we all know that means nothing at all in this spot. That is as close to a pick ’em line as we can get, obviously, so there is no room for any confidence especially after losing last weekend the way they did.
Ball State had the win over Northern Illinois all but secured with a field goal that gave the Cards a 29 – 27 lead with under 2 minutes to play. The defense fell apart and did nothing to prevent a drive that led to a 32-yard field on the final play of the game to give NIU the win.
There was their bowl game eligibility come and gone so now Mike Neu has to try to keep his program’s spirits in check because they could just fall apart if they are not careful. It is not easy to build momentum but it is sure easy to give it away.
Losing on the final play of any football game can be a tough pill to swallow so keeping your players focused is important. We know he can finally get his kids to win after the 7 – 1 2020 campaign but this is still something new to deal with in Muncie.
This team hadn’t seen the post-season since 2013 before last year, so the obvious goal is to get into bowl season, at least.
