Week 7 college football sees the Cougars and Bears meet at McLane Stadium.
The BYU Cougars jumped out to a 5 – 0 start to the 2021 season but suffered their first defeat last weekend against Boise State. The Broncos’ defense was swarming all afternoon creating 4 turnovers despite getting Jaren Hall back from injury.
Hall had missed the 2 previous games but the Cougars were still chasing bowl eligibility which they will now be doing this weekend.
The Bears will also be looking to secure an invite to a post-season bowl should they find win #6 on the season this weekend. As 6-point favorites at McLane, the Bears will hope to create the same trouble for BYU that led to their first loss a weekend ago.
Baylor will be playing 9 conference games this season instead of the normal 8 we are accustomed to seeing. The Bears are already 3 – 1 in conference play and their 5 remaining games will all be against Big 12 opponents.
The Bears are favored by 6 points in this Independent vs. Big 12 Conference matchup.
BYU Cougars
Despite looking terrible last weekend against Boise State, the Cougars still remain in the top-25 of the polls. Another loss would almost guarantee that they will be bounced out of the rankings and the Bears are the team favored by nearly a TD.
The Cougs jumped out to a 10 – 0 lead last time out against Boise State but the defense wore down and the turnovers just killed them The Broncos scored the next 23 points and held a 23 – 10 lead until halfway through the 4th quarter.
Jaren Hall did all he could to keep his team in the game long enough to make a comeback.
The comeback never came, however, and with 4 fumbles (3 lost) and a costly INT BYU had to endure their first loss of 2021.
Hall threw for over 300 yards and he leads the 61st ranked passing offense that puts up 237.5 YPG. Tyler Allgeier has seen plenty of the ball out of the backfield with 121 totes for 642 yards with 11 catches as well.
Allgeier has accounted for all 8 rushing TDs on this team and Lopini Katoa has carried the rock 40 times for another 165 yards.
Baylor Romney was certainly the more efficient of the two QBs as he threw 5 TD and never completed a ball to the wrong team. Romney took a blow to the head and missed the last game and he is questionable to dress this weekend.
I think we all expect the BYU defense to make some kind of an impact because over the years they always just manage to do something big that changes momentum. We may see the Cougars ranked in the middle of the pack in almost every defensive category, but all of us know that that’s just paperwork.
Baylor Bears
Let’s just start and end with Gerry Bohanon because every part of this offense is about his success in 2021. Bohanon has thrown 11 touchdown passes this season and can you guess how many times he has thrown the ball to the wrong team?
(Crickets, chirp chirp) Hmm, I guess that means he hasn’t thrown any INTs yet!
You are correct and we all know that turnovers lead to bad things and not committing them is usually a good idea. Bohanan won’t be leading the nation in this or on top of the world in that, but you can rely on him to be stable and understanding of the offense.
Luckily, he has a pair of dudes in his backfield that want the ball early and often the likes of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner. Smith is up to 78 carries for 597 yards and Ebner tacks on another 66 totes for 401 yards.
Oh, you need a big boy around the goal line to break the glass? Okay, meet #22, Mr. Taye McWilliams!
Taye has a pair of scores and 181 yards from only 17 carries and Bohanan is no stranger to the end zone either. Bohanan sits 4th on the roster with 6 more touchdowns runs from 39 jaunts well over 100-yards this season himself.
When things break down, Bohanan knows how to escape the pocket and move the chains with his legs at any moment! His 1,332 passing yards tell you how well he uses that right arm as well, so BYUs defense will have its hands full this weekend.

Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
Despite how BYU lost their last game, this team just finds ways to stay in games and these 6.5 points are plenty. I totally suggest teasing that and using it as combo material for those who make such bets. In addition, 888sport is featuring the +7 for -130 for those who just want to not get hooked on the 6.5. Yes, it costs a few cents to do it but those who know the value of a push get my drift!
