Week 6 college football sees the Broncos and Cougars meet at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
We have ourselves quite the line move headed towards the Boise State BYU game this weekend in Provo. What was a field goal spread when the line opened has now become a much wider gap from the line setters who show the Cougars chalked at nearly -6 now.
Boise State let Carson Strong and Toa Taua of Nevada basically take over the game in the 41 – 31 loss to the Wolfpack last weekend. The loss left the Broncos at 2 – 3 entering a matchup that what was once very familiar when they were in the WAC together for so long back in the day. Now that BYU has jumped to the Independent market, these two programs still find ways to land on each other’s schedules.
The Cougars are ranked #10 in the land and if this game goes anything as it did a year ago? Oh boy, the Broncos will be in trouble because it was 51 – 17 and the only time that BYU had lit up a top-25 ranked defense for 50 points ever. If that does happen again, BYU will be looking at 6 – 0 with trips to Baylor and Washington State on deck the following weekends.
The Cougars are favored by 5.5 points in this MWC vs. Independent Conference matchup.
Boise State Broncos
Head Coach Andy Avalos was fortunately not here a season ago when BYU whacked this program to a 51 – 17 defeat in then #21-ranked Boise State’s own house.
Hank Bachmeier had another stellar day throwing 4 TD passes to only 1 INT, and the 34 for 47 with 388 yards looks pretty nice too. Albeit a loss to go under .500 for the first time in a long time, now the Broncos are underdogs on the road against a sound Cougars squad that is waiting for them, in fact looking forward to hosting them.
When you read articles that the other team IS EXCITED to see you again because they laid a whooping on your ass the last time they saw you? Yeah, hello!
That might be why the line moved from 3 to nearly 6 now because the public sees that as intimidating, arrogant, and confident at the same time. Bettors like that stuff!
So, can Hank gather the boys up and provide an upset in Provo? Sure they can because it is Mission: Difficult, not Mission: Impossible.
We do see some injury concerns on defense for the Broncos along the front line with Scale Igiehon, Herbert Gums Jr., Divine Obichere, and Keeghan Freeborn all questionable to go this weekend.
Bachmeier leads the 18th ranked passing attack in the nation that puts up 304 yards a game, but the run game? Yeah, issues, baby! Out of 130 FBS programs, the Broncos sit in the 124 slot in rushing yards per game with 82.4 per affair. Suffice to say the ball will be in the air again especially if the Cougars jump out to a lead and then the air attack will be full boar.
Evidence from last weekend’s loss to Nevada with 33 rushes for 43 yards. The Broncos have had their own issues stopping the run as they rank 107th allowing 194 ypg on the ground per outing.
BYU Cougars
The Cougars have not exactly played a cupcake schedule to get to 5 – 0 as Arizona, Utah, and Arizona State are certainly not some weak FCS crap we see from other Independent Conference teams.
The Cougars want to earn the respect of the voters although, okay, Idaho State on November 6th might scratch a few heads. Regardless of that, BYU was 5 points from perfection in 2020 and is now 16 – 1 over the last 17 games.
Now, let’s get to the issues at hand, and it starts with who will be calling plays under center for head coach Kalani Sitake. As you can see if you look around, Hall wasn’t around last weekend and we can never 100% confirm what he will be doing until we see him either on or off the field on Saturday.
Baylor Romney took a blow to the dome last weekend and he is questionable to go at all in this game. Coming from someone who has had 5 major concussions myself in my life, yeah, F**k getting out there this weekend kid, sit it out, man! Head injuries are so tricky to read and you can think you are fine and that can change with one wrong twist of the neck without even hitting your head again. A relapse can come from simply turning wrong… TRUST ME I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE!
So, I hope they keep him sidelined until he is clearly all right to be on a field with men trying to kill you every weekend!
So, that leaves obvious concerns if Hall is not in great shape either because Jacob Conover has completed 5 pases in his entire NCAA career.
Tyler Allgeier will have a ton of pressure on him to run the ball well because BYU might go as he goes this weekend. Allgeier is already over 100 carries and has accumulated 569 yards with 7 trips to paydirt in 2021. Lopini Katoa? Yeah, he is the only other RB on the depth chart so if anything happens to Allgeier the shit will surely be hitting the fan in Provo. Th Broncos defense will certainly be aware of his importance to the Cougar offense on Saturday.

Free Week 6 NCAA Football Pick
Please keep moving this line for me, kids! I actually do see +6 at a handful of sites out there with Boise, and with both QBs for BYU looking iffy I have to think dog here.
Move it to 6 or wait for it to get to 6 and think dog with the Broncos in Provo.
