Week 1 college football sees the Bears and Bobcats meet at Bobcat Stadium.
The Baylor Bears have some ‘splainin to do, Lucy. Whatever happened last season needs to be forgotten and put in the rear-view mirror as quickly as possible. Dave Aranda took over a Bears program that won double-digit games in 2019, but 2 wins in 2020 were all he could find to begin his tenure in Waco. How will year two turn out? The line setters are asking you to choose between over or under 5.5 Bear wins on your futures betting card.
The Bobcats also only found 2 wins in 2020 under Jake Spavital as he enters his third season running the program. Since 2015, no Bobcats campaign has produced more than 3 wins in a season. Spavital has only grabbed 5 wins over the last two seasons, but apparently, the expectations are higher in 2021. The Bobcats team’s total wins are listed at 4.5 this year, so something might in the making.
The Bears are favored by -14 points in this Big 12 vs. Sun Belt matchup.
Let’s face it! 2 – 7 had a lot of people concerned that hiring Dave Aranda was the right man for the job. Aranda inherited an 11-win program in 2019 and the talk was to build on that and make it richer. Yeah, not so much!
So, this season has got to be a big one in Waco with expectations back on high alert again. When you see a team total listed at 5.5 wins, you know that one thing will result if they topple the number. A bowl bid would likely come with 6 wins although Texas Southern on the schedule next weekend doesn’t exactly impress anyone named voter Joe. (Or any of us either, for that matter)
Gerry Bohanon will dawn his familiar #11 jersey calling the signals for Aranda and OC Jeff Grimes. Grimes will be a huge asset to the play calling with all of his experience to rely on. The two worked together at LSU for a spell and Grimes was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2020 with the BYU Cougars. <<< Great move!
We will all have to sit back and see if the defensive side of the ball was addressed enough in the off-season. Keep in mind, when you see every outlet basically saying, “well, it can only be a step up from the previous season”, you know it is a coin-flip situation as to how it all ends up.
Hi, my name is Apu and it is nice to meet you! Hmm hmm, so, you like big dudes? You know, the 6-4, 350-lb terror that will be wreaking havoc on opposing O-lines every Saturday? My goodness, Apu Ika is quite an addition to ANY ROSTER! So, the defense gets 10 starters from 2020 back and adds an animal named Apu to the mix. All righty then!
Texa State Bobcats
In 2014, the Bobcats were 7 – 5 and were the only team to be left out of the post-season with a winning record. They are still chasing that first bowl appearance and Jake Spavital would love to be the guy to get them there.
It has been a rough few years in San Marcos, as there have not been more than 3 wins in any Bobcats campaign since being left out in 2014.
Coach Spavital and OC Jacob Peeler have decided that Brady McBride will once again start the year calling the shots under center. McBride made 8 starts a year ago and has the honor of wearing the Captaincy badge for his team in 2021. In addition, Tyler Vitt is one of the 5 team captains after losing the starting QB battle, but he will still get time on the field in his junior season somehow. Vitt does have 16 starts to his credit so he has the support of his teammates regardless of if he starts or not.
This is what I mean about returning starters stats you read about so listen to me. You see 8 starters on defense returned to the team from 2020, right? Yeah, only 3 of them are actually starting 2021 opening day, so those little stats only hold so much weight. A team can be as happy guys are back as they want to appear but things change on a dime with every team, every day.
Anyway, the question becomes if Texas State can win more games this season than they have over the last 2 years? Yeah uh, that’s a no and I expect maybe 3 wins again this season for Spavital and co.
Hi, Incarnate Word! And then from there, they might be dogs in almost every game this year, including this one, obviously.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
Da Bears, well no, that’s Chicago. The Bears are laying two TDs on the road and that could be concerning. But, it’s not concerning enough to expect a 24 – 7 1st half that basically turns into a bit of a beat down.
4* Free Week 1 NCAA Betting Pick:
We are growling with the Bears and laying the chalk at -14 to take an emphatic win over the Bobcats. This game should be perfect for a Big 12 team looking to give experience to everyone who needs to prepare for conference play.
