Week 7 college football sees the Mountaineers and Ragin’ Cajuns meet at Cajun Field.
A pair of 4 – 1 Sun Belt Conference programs meet on Tuesday night at Cajun Stadium and what a matchup this is! These two programs have every intention of meeting again in the conference title game as they did in 2018 and 2019.
The Mountaineers have gotten the better of Louisiana in 4 of the last 5 meetings, but last year Billy Napier finally found a win over App State, 24 – 21 on the final day of the regular season. There was no SBC title game in 2020 due to obvious reasons but we expect to have one this year and these two both plan on being there again.
Overall, the Mountaineers had taken 8 straight wins over Louisiana since they become conference foes in 2014, but the Cajuns are hopeful that trend will start to go their way.
The Mountaineers’ only loss came on September 11 in Miami and what thriller it was in what almost ended up being another huge win for this program, 25 – 23. Who can ever forget the Michigan miracle that put APP State on the regional map when they upset the Wolverines.
The Cajuns’ only loss came on opening weekend to the Texas Longhorns, 38 – 18, and they are riding a 4-game win streak coming into this weekend. Both teams were last seen on the field back on October 2 and they will each have the weekend off with 6 games left to go in the regular season.
The Mountaineers are favored by 3.5 points in this Sun Belt Conference matchup.
Appalachian State
Favored on the road and expected to improve to 5 – 1, the Mountaineers know this is the game circled on the bog board because of what each program has accomplished in recent years.
The Mountaineers have had the Cajun’s number over the years but last year that run ended and this team wants bragging right back again.
The plan to back to that success will come in the running game this weekend, as the Cajuns defense has a lot of questions to answer. Louisiana ranks 85th in the land allowing over 400 yards a game, and sit at 91 allowing 171.2 rush yards an outing.
That will put Nate Noel and Camerun Peoples in motion early and often although Noel is hampered by a toe injury. He is listed as questionable to go despite the 10 days off to recover but he will not have to do all the damage himself this weekend.
Starting QB Chase Brice can certainly rely on his arm to move the chains and he has quite the trio of receivers to do it with. Corey Sutton, Thomas Hennigan, and Malik Williams are by far leading this team in receptions, yards, and anything else that Appalachian State has to offer at wideout. The 3 have combined to bring in 86 balls, tallied 1103 yards with 6 scoring strikes through the air, and Christian Wells is also over the 100-yard mark.
App State’s offense ranks 17th in the nation putting up 481.4 total yards per game and the 35.2 PPG puts them at 30th.
The defensive stats are shiny too! Also ranking 30th, the Mountaineers only allow 20 PPG and are effecient against the run only letting opponents run for 117.6 ypg.
Louisiana
Home dogs? The team that was 10 – 1 a season ago and took out Appalachian State along the way is now a dog at home?
Oh, make no mistake that everyone in this program is taking note that the oddsmakers think they are not good enough to beat the Mountaineers… Again!
At the same token, 31-year old DC Patrick Toney hopefully took this week to prepare for a battle because the App State offense is balanced and can’t beat you in multiple ways.
Louisiana squeeked past the South Alabama Jags last time out taking their 6th straight win over that program. A 20 – 18 win wasnt all that convincing but a W is a W and that is all that matters, sort of.
This is not going to be a similar game to that and Louisiana knows that their defense is suspect so the points better be coming too.
The Cajuns are a middle of the pack offense that really doesn’t do anything great but does enough to find wins. Sitting at 60 -70th in nearly every offensive category, Levi Lewis will need to produce a big game and he’s done a great job keeping the offense on the field. With only 1 INT to 7 TD strikes, the ratio is nice but the 8 sacks are concerning and then the kicking game comes into play.
The Cajuns lost their starting kicker Kenneth Almendares is done for the season and their kicker missed a pair of FG attempts last weekend in a 2-point game and he missed two of his extra point tries as well. Not good!
Starting left tackle Carlos Rubio is out and you see 3 OL players overall that will miss this game with him. The other two are backups, but depth still being a concern.
Bailey, Johnson, and Smith will all be seen running the ball and each has done their fair share of contrubiting to the season. Email Bailey leads the squad with 249 yards from 34 carries, Montrell Johnson has 45 rushes to his credit for 232 yards, and Chris Smith has toted the rock a team-leading 52 times for 231 yards, and the 3 have combined to find the end zone 9 times.

The line is exactly where it should be and this will be close. I am calling for a 33 – 27 road win and the cover for App State. The Over might just come along with it too, so don’t be shy expecting those points to be there.
