2017 Auburn Tigers Predictions: Team Strengths
Stifling Defense: The Tigers were slow starters last year, losing two of their first three games. However, they dominated the middle of the season, winning six straight and stifling opposing offenses.
It was always on the backs of the great defense that Auburn had success. Even in their four regular season losses, they only allowed more than 19 points once.
Seven of eleven starters will be returning on that side of the ball for 2017. They lost some key pieces, but they also have some impressive talent ready to jump in.
Tandem Backfield: There is no question that the Tigers’ success this year will depend largely upon their stifling defense, but they also boast one of the best backfields in the entire nation.
Kamryn Pettway led the SEC last year with 1,224 yards rushing last year, and he is looking as strong as ever coming into 2017. The explosive, versatile weapon that is Kerryon Johnson will also be returning to provide a great contrast and explosive plays.
The running game will drive the Auburn offense and dictate the pace of every game this season, and they have an incredible pair of running backs to do so.
2017 Auburn Tigers Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Same Old, Same Old: Every year, Auburn has the potential to win the SEC and make the CFB Playoffs because of their strong defense and running game. And every year, the weak link seems to be the passing game.
Sean White has the what it takes to be a good quarterback, but he has already suffered four injuries in two years at Auburn, including a broken arm in the Sugar Bowl last season.
Junior college transfer and former Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham has lots of Auburn fans hopeful, but he is unproven in a league that chews up inconsistent quarterbacks.
If Stidham lives up to hopes, Auburn can go all the way this year. If not, it will be same old, same old.
Auburn Tigers Prediction: 10-2
The Tigers are clearly right on the cusp of being great. They have all the ingredients, but they just need to prove that they have what it takes to properly combine them.
The second game of 2017 at Clemson will be the early indicator whether Auburn is for real this year, and they should be able to win over a diminished version of last year’s champs.
Their toughest stretch will be four games in October/November at LSU, at Arkansas, at Texas A&M and at home against Georgia.
Then, as always, it will come down to the final game of the season against Alabama. The Iron Bowl will be at home for the Tigers this year, but that still may not be enough to topple the reigning kings of the division.
