Wednesday, March 9th. the Atlanta Hawks play the Milwaukee Bucks for the third and final time this season. Milwaukee has already won the season series winning both prior matches on November 14th (120-100) and January 17th (121-114).
The Hawks last played Monday losing 110-113 to the Pistons in overtime while the Bucks last played Sunday beating the depleted Suns 132-122.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Bucks taking two of the three contests. In a rarity, the teams have split their matches all-time with 114 wins each.
Atlanta Hawks
Losing a game to the lottery-bound Pistons is sure to be a source of inspiration to the Hawks who were in a position to rise up the ladder given the team is virtually tied with the Nets and Hornets.
They had two games in hand so this won’t sit well with Nate McMillan who is trying to get his club to revisit the defense they were able to use to propel themselves up the ladder last season.
Atlanta has been guilty of expectations seemingly playing like they thought it would be an automatic they would once again be in the mix just because they performed well last season.
The offense is still lethal but the team doesn’t bring the necessary focus or effort on the defensive end. As a result, they lost on Monday and fall a half-game back of Charlotte and Brooklyn and keep the Wizards’ hopes to catch them for the final play-in seed alive.
Washington is 1.5 games off the pace to catch them and will play them on April 6th in what could be a deciding factor on where the teams finish the season.
Atlanta has 18 games remaining with seven versus teams seeded seventh or higher and four critical matches versus teams vying for those play-in seeds including Brooklyn, Charlotte, and New Orleans.
Time is running out for this team to flip the switch Trae Young referenced at the trade deadline.
Kevin Huerter (shoulder) was upgraded to probable to participate in the match Wednesday versus the Bucks.
Milwaukee Bucks
It’s hard to tell if the Bucks are just toying with us as they seem to bring the necessary effort in matches against elite squads and let losses to lower-level teams roll off their backs.
Unlike the Hawks, this squad is able to flip a switch and turn things on when it matters, and with news Brook Lopez is progressing and could return to the court before season end that should have their opponents a bit more nervous.
It’s worth noting their matchup could be a factor that could shift their nonchalance about these games. Looking at the other teams in the East the Bucks have won (or are leading the series) versus the Bulls and Nets.
They tied the Heat and Hornets as well as the 76ers but have one game left versus Philly. They were swept by the Raptors, have already lost the series to the Hawks, and are down 1-2 versus the Celtics and Cavaliers with a game left to decide those series.
Wes Matthews (hamstring) was upgraded to probable, Grayson Allen (hip) is out and George Hill (neck) was downgraded to out Wednesday versus the Thunder. Pat Connaughton (finger) and Brook Lopez (back) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams’ last 10 head to head meetings
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction
With the 76ers pulling ahead of them in the standings it will be interesting to see whether the Bucks bring that ‘special focus’ to this match or whether this is a decided choice by them as they jockey for a specific position.
Could they be attempting to avoid having to play the Raptors for example who have owned them in recent seasons or the Nets who would be bolstered by having their new big 3 in the mix come playoff time? Doubtful – I don’t think they care who they play.
This match will be more about how desperate the Hawks play as the one area Milwaukee tends to concede is the 3-point line where Atlanta can excel but they’ll need to balance it with defense and I’m not confident they will or that Clint Capela can contain Antetokounmpo.
