Pre Season NFL Betting – Detroit Lions at Cleveland Browns
The NFL betting public will get another look at super rookie Calvin Johnson on Saturday. Also on the Lions/Browns ticket is the NFL preseason debut of Browns’ rookie QB Brady Quinn.
The Lions started the preseason last week by edging Cincinnati 27-26 as a 3-point home favorite. The Lions’ starters provided very little offensive support in this game and left it to the second and third-stringers to win via comeback in the final frame. Jon Kitna barely saw the field enough to break a sweat while completing 3-of-5 passes for 52 yards. Roy Williams had a short night, hauling in one pass for 23 yards, while Johnson’s debut came without any fireworks as he caught only two passes for 45 yards. The Lions rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter behind two touchdown passes from third-string QB Dan Orlovsky and a field goal from Kenny Byrd. The Detroit starters will likely see more time on the field Saturday night, so Kitna and Johnson should have more time to connect in real-game situations.
The Browns also won their preseason opener last week with a 16-12 victory over Kansas City as a 3-point home favorite. Charlie Frye got the start at QB for Cleveland after winning coach Romeo Crennel’s coin flip. Frye’s numbers looked good, as he completed 12-of-15 passes for 122 yards, but he failed to get the ball deep into Chiefs territory and the end zone. Derek Anderson wasn’t an improvement over Frye when he entered the game. Anderson could not find the end zone either – completing 7-of-16 passes for 76 yards.
The rest of Cleveland’s big offensive names were all quiet, as Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow each caught only one pass and Jamal Lewis had four carries for 20 yards. The Browns’ lone TD in the game came from Chris Barclay who returned a kickoff 88 yards for six. Ken Dorsey also saw a few plays behind center for Cleveland, while first-round pick Brady Quinn watched from the sidelines with a clipboard and a playbook all night. Quinn’s sideline seat was a product of his training camp holdout, but he’s expected the finally enter the fray on Saturday night.
According to reports out of the Browns’ camp, Quinn will play most of the second half. Due to his holdout and some other off-field issues Quinn isn’t very popular with the fans in Cleveland right now, but he could change that quickly if he has a solid debut. Quinn will have the luxury of playing against the Lions’ backup defenders. Last season the Lions were near the bottom of the league against the pass.
The Lions and Browns haven’t squared off since 2005 when Detroit clipped Cleveland 13-10 as a 3-point road dog. The NFL odds have the Lions listed as a road dog again, this time by 2.5 points, while the total is set at 35.5.
