NFL Football Futures Betting – Improvement in the Cards
Our best Sportsbooks has got the NFL covered – you can bet on any of the league’s eight divisions, not to mention the AFC and NFC champions, and of course, the winner of Super Bowl XLIII. One of the teams that has never gotten to the Super Bowl since its inception is the Arizona Cardinals. Having made a few strides under Ken Whisenhunt last year, can they make the big leap in 2008? We’ll examine that today.
First, here’s a look at the NFL betting odds to win the NFC West title as well as the NFC championship, as it is posted at Our best Sportsbooks:

Carolina Panthers +2000
Detroit Lions +2500
Chicago Bears +1600
San Francisco 49ers +3000
St. Louis Rams +3000
Atlanta Falcons +7500
There’s something about these Cardinals, where they just can’t get over the hump. A couple of years ago they blew that big lead against the Chicago Bears in that fabled Monday night game, and the meltdown started, leading to the departure of Dennis Green. In came Ken Whisenhunt, who brought the Cards to an 8-8 record in his first year, a three-game improvement over what they had done in either of the two previous seasons.

Of course, getting to that next level is much more difficult. Can Arizona get to that level in the NFC West?
A cornerstone of their future is supposed to be Matt Leinart, the Heisman Trophy winner who was drafted two seasons ago. But there are a lot of people around the league who doubt Leinart will ever become a premier NFL quarterback. We didn’t find out much last season, because he was only able to play five games before breaking his collarbone. He’ll have the ball in his hands again this year, but he’ll have to do better than the 53.6% he completed last season. Kurt Warner threw for 27 touchdowns while Leinart was down, and remains the backup, as well as the favorite of many fans who would like to see the Cardinals go down the field more.
Like Leinart, Edgerrin James may have to do better as well. James has run for over 1000 yards in each of his two seasons in Phoenix, but he has averaged only 3.4 and 3.8 yards per carry, respectively, in those two seasons. If the offensive line can open better holes for him, it’s going to be a huge boost because of the balance it will give this offense. Everybody knows the Cardinals have one of the best wide receiver combos in the league in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, and they drafted Early Doucet from LSU, who might be able to contribute right away.
The defense has some capable players, and has made some additions. Bertrand Berry and Chike Okeafor can bring this pass rush to a new level, but they will have to overcome injuries that sidelined them last year. Calais Campbell, a Miami Hurricane, was chosen in the second round to help in this area. In the 3-4 alignment, Karlos Dansby is a standout, and Clark Haggans, plucked as a free agent from Pittsburgh, is a reinforcement on the outside. It remains to be seen whether first-round draft pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie can unseat either Roderick Hood or Eric Green at one of the cornerback positions.
There is no question that the NFC West is relatively weak. The Seattle Seahawks are solid, but far from bullet-proof. The Rams should be improved, but still have to demonstrate that. The 49ers may or may not have a quarterback of the future in Alex Smith, and that will be a question mark until further notice. Whisenhunt got the Cards a little further last season, but Leinart will have to become a very consistent quarterback for them to be a playoff team.
