MLB Betting: Red Sox, Rockies head to Game 3
BetUS – You have a few more days to get in your final MLB betting fix for the year – the World Series continues this weekend with the Red Sox and Rockies playing twice at Coors Field.
Colorado came into this series on an incredible run, but unless they can get some of that magic back over the next few days they’re going to have to settle for entering the offseason as the National League champs. The Rockies were edged 2-1 by Boston in Game 2 on Thursday night, and they’re now down 2-0 in the best-of-seven title series.
Curt Schilling went 5 1-3 innings in his Game 2 start for the Red Sox, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out four batters. Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez wasn’t quite as good, surrendering two earned runs on three hits and five walks over 4 2-3 innings pitched. Todd Helton drove in the first run of the game for Colorado with an RBI groundout in the first inning, but Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell picked up RBI for Boston in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, as their team cruised to the victory.
Boston had no trouble picking up a victory in Game 1 behind the pitching of Josh Beckett and the hitting of pretty much everyone in their lineup. Beckett went seven innings in that 13-1 win, allowing just one earned run on six hits while fanning nine. Dustin Pedroia homered for the BoSox in the first inning, while David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Varitek, and J.D. Drew each drove in two runs. Rockies starter Jeff Francis lasted just four innings, surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits in that defeat.
For Game 3 the Red Sox will send Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound. The Japanese rookie righthander pitched twice against the Indians in the American League Championship Series, going 1-1. His first outing was in Game 3 of that set – and it wasn’t a successful one. Dice-K surrendered four earned runs on six hits over 4 2-3 innings, walking two and striking out six as the Red Sox fell into a 2-1 hole in the series.
However, Matsuzaka bounced back with a solid outing in the all-important Game 7, giving up just two earned runs on six hits over five innings, walking none and fanning three. Boston scored 11 runs in that game to easily advance to the World Series. The righthander pitched once in the opening round against the Angels, getting a no-decision.
Josh Fogg will counter Matsuzaka at Coors Field on Saturday night, and he’ll be making just his second start of the postseason. The righthander had a stellar outing against the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series, giving up just one earned run on seven hits over six innings in a victory. Fogg also threw two scoreless relief innings against the Phillies in the opening round, picking up the win for them in Game 2.
The Red Sox had planned to use Tim Wakefield as their fourth starter in the World Series, but his sore shoulder got him dropped from the roster. Instead the team will turn to Jon Lester in Game 4 on Sunday, and he’ll be making his first start of the playoffs. Lester pitched twice in relief against the Indians, giving up two runs over 3 2-3 innings.
Colorado will send Aaron Cook to the mound for Game 4, and he’ll be making his first start of the postseason as well after recovering from a strained side muscle. The Rockies’ opening-day starter hasn’t pitched in a major-league game since August 10, when he gave up two earned runs on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the Cubs.
Here is the complete schedule for the rest of the series, which would continue Monday:
Game 3 – October 27 – Boston at Colorado, 8:30 p.m. ET
Game 4 – October 28 – Boston at Colorado, 8:30 p.m. ET
Game 5 – October 29 – Boston at Colorado, 8:30 p.m. ET
Game 6 – October 31 – Colorado at Boston, 8:30 p.m. ET
Game 7 – November 1 – Colorado at Boston, 8:30 p.m. ET
