PGA Betting – President’s Cup Odds
The seventh President’s Cup tournament will tee-off on September 27th thru September 30th when the United States takes on the International team in Montreal’s prestigious Royal Montreal Golf Club. The Americans may have the top four ranked golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking, but they can not escape one undeniable truth: the Americans have not won a match-play tournament overseas since the 1993 Ryder Cup.

The Blue Course at Royal Montreal Golf Club will be a 7,171 yard, par 70 course. While the wide landing areas of the course will favor the long drivers of the Americans, the angular and steep greens will give any player a sore headache. This goes without mentioning the treacherously deep bunkers that are due to trap anyone who plays the greens short.
Jack Nicklaus will captain the United States team and has brought together a formidable roster that boasts eighteen PGA Tour victories and a combined 46 appearances in both the President’s Cup and Ryder Cup. Meanwhile, Gary Player will once again seize the mantle as captain of the International side. This is the fourth consecutive tournament that Nicklaus and Player will clash head-to-head as captains. Nicklaus, thus far, holds the advantage with a 2-0-1 record against Player.
The Americans will boast an impressive side, highlighted by Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson. Woods, who won the PGA Championship and the inaugural FedEx Cup this season, accounts for seven of the eighteen tour victories on the American team. Phil Michelson has three of those eighteen victories, including a win at The PLAYERS Championship in May. Steve Stricker displayed a masterfully consistent game during the grueling FedEx Cup, where he placed second behind Tiger.
Not to be outdone, the International team will try to combat the American’s impressive team resume with depth. While the Americans have the top four golfers in the world, the International team has nine of the top-15. The team roster is highlighted by Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, K.J. Choi and Adam Scott.
Player’s International squad has 26 years of President’s Cup experience. Aside from Geoff Ogilvy and Rory Sabbatatini, the International team consists of match-play veterans. Also, in an effort to counter the runaway train known as Tiger Woods, Gary Player has also enlisted the aid of Australian Nick O’Hern. While Woods has been unstoppable in stroke play, O’Hern has two match-play victories over Tiger from this year’s World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship tournament.
This International team also has a dose of Canadian controversy. Mike Weir was selected over his Canadian counterpart, Stephen Ames who has enjoyed a much better season and currently sits ahead of Weir in the Official World Golf Ranking. Weir’s 8-6 overall record in match-play will help ease the tension. Weir’s popularity in Canada will also help sway the gallery in favor of the International team.
That does not mean, unfortunately, that they will have an easy time in the 2007 President’s Cup. The USA is favored at -150, while the International team is the decisive underdog at +110 in the Our best Sportsbooks. The combined firepower of the Americans makes them look like definitive champions, but match-play tournaments have hosted a bevy of upsets.
Before you go ahead betting your mortgage on Tiger Woods and the star-studded American team, keep history in mind. While the Americans have had an easy ride to victory each time the President’s Cup is hosted by the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, they have not been so fortunate outside their own borders. They tied 17-17 in South Africa in 2003 and were crushed in Melbourne, Australia in the 1998 President’s Cup.
Will the 2007 President’s Cup be friendly to the home team of Mike Weir and the International team, or will the Americans finally be able to break a seventeen year losing streak in international match-play? When these two teams clash in Ile Bizard, Quebec on Thursday, September 27th, make sure you have your money invested in the right team. We will see if the talent and star power of the Americans is enough to overcome history.
